The Disney Store is proud to introduce the Star Wars Toybox range of action figures, bringing adventures to life with characters from across The Walt Disney Company.

Disney has been consistent with the Star Wars Toybox line. It’s been a one-figure-per-package line, and when they do “break” that format and include another character in the packaging, it’s indirectly designated as an accessory. BB-8 was an “accessory” for Poe Dameron. And now, R2-D2 is an “accessory” for C-3PO. C-3PO is one of the standout figures in the Star Wars Toybox line. Not looking all that different than the animated take of the character in The Clone Wars, Disney added C-3PO in the Star Wars Toybox line in 5” scale and with the same odd “greenish” gold that we also saw Hasbro implement on that previously mentioned The Clone Wars figure. We wondered when Disney would start adding droid characters into the line, and this is their first. They don’t make many non-human characters in this format, Chewbacca and Jedi Master And Force Spirit Yoda were the only exceptions thus far, and now we have C-3PO and R2-D2 to add into the mix.

C-3PO comes with a unique articulation system due to the inherent nature of the character’s design. That’s expected. The most notable differences are found in the upper body and especially the arms. Disney also went with an open position for both of C-3PO’s hands. Not that C-3PO comes with any accessories or anything, but open palms are not an ideal design for any action figure. We don’t understand the coloring Disney gave C-3PO. Whether something was lost in translation or not, the gold color has a strong greenish tint to it. This has happened with other C-3PO action figures produced by Hasbro too. Something must go awry at the factory level when attempting to achieve the correct gold color for C-3PO action figures. The head sculpt is lifelike, and because this interpretation comes with pupils, you can’t help but think of the Droids interpretation of C-3PO from the vintage classic Kenner line. Interestingly, R2-D2 doesn't share the same likeness of its Droids counterpart.

As briefly mentioned, R2-D2 is the “accessory” with C-3PO. But Disney developed a fully-articulated version of the character, complete with simple “third leg” technology. Disney gave R2-D2 a decent sculpt, but some of the figure’s paint operations could be better applied. The figure comes with a swiveling dome, swivel legs, swivel “feet,” and simple articulation around the third leg. R2-D2 is in scale with C-3PO, and the two figures interact nicely with each other. Together, we have the duo of droid seen throughout the entire Original Trilogy as well as most of the Prequel Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy. We’re sourcing them to A New Hope along with Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa. We’re still waiting for the Disney Star Wars Toybox line to push the boundaries of its current comfort zone. Aliens and bounty hunters will do well in this line. That’s why the animated figure lines struggle. The licensees go with knee-jerk character selection, instead of looking beyond the obvious.
