Luke Skywalker is obviously the most popular character in the Original Trilogy. And while he maintains this status through the years, Hasbro sometimes ignores some of his most popular outfits for too long a time (years even) in between action figure releases. But usually the wait is very worthwhile because when that update finally gets revisited, it is usually something that makes collectors very happy. Luke Skywalker: X-wing Pilot from the 2006 "vintage styled" collection is a figure that was a fantastic choice for the royal treatment, but is unfortunately still isn’t perfect and could use another few tweaks. This doesn’t mean it’s not a phenomenally constructed and designed action figure, but it needs a few more things before it can be classified as definitive. It offers a lot and is pretty awesome as far as articulation is concerned, but the color of the skin and the look of the portrait just isn’t perfect enough in our opinions. This "vintage styled" figure was part of a 2006 Ultimate Galactic Hunt promotion which included a foil sticker (and the certificate) to send away for a George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) action figure (also in vintage packaging).
Luke Skywalker: X-wing Pilot is an all-new figure (save for the head which has been used again from the 2004 "vintage styled" version of Luke Skywalker). But interestingly, Hasbro gave this pilot version of Luke a very bizarre skin color. Looking as if he has been soaking in the sun in Hawaii or the Bahamas, Luke is much too dark and it is very inaccurate. In fact, we did a double take, but we could swear tht Hasbro has added some eyeshadow as well. What's worse for more collectors is that he comes with the incorrect lightsaber hilt: Darth Vader’s to be exact. And back to the head sculpt, we wish Hasbro didn’t reuse the 2004 VOTC Luke Skywalker head. Let’s be honest. It doesn’t look like Luke at all and the crazy zigzag bangs are just a bit too much to accept. There is a plethora of excellent Luke heads that could have been used. And we’re not even sure why this head has made it so far with Lucasfilm, Ltd. approval. It is just so way off in our opinions. The figure is scaled perfectly well and despite the wrong lightsaber hilt, the figure does still come with the correct blaster pistol and lit lightsaber that fit very well in his hands.
