Whether they are merchandise to the Jawas of Tatooine, servants of the Evil Galactic Empire or friends of the Rebel Alliance, droids of all different types populate the Star Wars galaxy. From Astromechs, to Protocol or even Assassin Droids, there are many different colors and styles of each droid class. Each droid is different and has their own unique personality. At the Star Wars Droid Factory, Guests can build and name a Star Wars droid that is uniquely their own.

May the Force be with You.... and your Droids!

3,429,216. No, that’s not the number of hits in our Research Droids Reviews database. We’re just exceeded 16 million hits as continue into our eight year of publishing daily reviews on Star Wars stuff. Today is extra special because we hit 3,000 Research Droids Reviews today! That opening number actually represents the total permutations of protocol droids you can make with Disney’s unbelievably fun Droid Factory collection, which for a few of years now has now moved away from the Hasbro supported STAR TOURS branding into the revised Disney Parks Droid Factory banner. For the first time ever, Disney Parks has added protocol droids to their popular theme park attraction, and it has piqued the interest of collectors everywhere. What makes the protocol droids so special is that they’re loaded with articulation, with many of them exceeding the premium articulation Hasbro gave their own protocol Build A Droid figures in The Legacy Collection and Legacy Collection lines. What’s more, Disney Parks went all out here by reaching across the Star Wars saga and pulled familiar droids specifically from the Original Trilogy. And for the first time ever from any toymaker, Disney Parks introduces the Vendor Droid which they’ve provided to us in all six colors. In Disney Parks’ 2017 Droid Factory collection we have the option to build 3PO-series Protocol Droids, CZ-series Communications/Business Droids, LOM-series Protocol Droids, RA-7-series Protocol Droids and Vendor Droids. The colors are basic, but Disney Parks included black, blue, gold, red, silver and white. When fully built, hardcore Hasbro collectors will notice the striking similarities to figures from the films (as well as action figures Hasbro has already produced), yet these figures are unique enough to be their own different characters, which is why we love this line so much.

Aside from The Vintage Collection (which wins first place ranking just on packaging alone and is returning Spring 2018), Build A Droid is the next Star Wars collector favorite add-on to the basic figure line period. Of course that is just our opinion, but try to think of something better that is offered by another Lucasfilm Ltd. licensee. We think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread in all honesty. All of the protocol droids are approached similar in design and features. While they look different from each other because of their respective models, all of the protocol droids come with 21 points of articulation which is astounding for a theme park collectible. This nearly falls under super-articulated status for even the most stringent of collectors. The protocol droids aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but we accept them for what they are and truly hope that they’re a success for Disney Parks so that more are produced in the future. Some of their issues include wonky and slightly warped legs. Also, the ankles don’t seem to installed perfectly on many samples, so it’s hard to get them to meet the surface of your display evenly. You’ll find that you need to bend the knees and hips a little more than you’d prefer to make the figure stand unassisted. The ball-jointed elbows are wonderful, but on some of the protocol droid styles they don’t bend as much as we would like to see. Still, all of these parts move and for that we’re thankful. The paint operations on all of the parts is impressive. No collectors are going to find fault with how these droids have been painted. The plastic that was used to cast them does feel too shiny for our tastes, but again, there is too much to enjoy than be distracted by what we’d like to see changed or revised.

Just like the Disney Parks 2015 Collection, Disney has recreated, albeit not perfectly, key and background protocol droids from the Star Wars saga. Droids like K-3PO, R-3PO, C-3PO, CZ-3, CZ-4, MB-RA-7 and 5D6-RA-7 can be assembled in this collection within reason. Just keep in mind that they won’t be completely screen accurate. Deco differences will exist, but hopefully you won’t look that deeply into this. This is meant to be fun, so enjoy it. You can also “sort of” make other characters from the Star Wars film with less accurate results, but the fun is still there nonetheless. You can even take this further and cull together “close enough looking” droids. What we slightly disappointed with is the Vendor Droid. Interestingly, Disney Parks gave us this droid in all six colors, but from what we can tell all of the ones seen in The Clone Wars television series have a base green color and varying stripes. None seem to imitate any from this Droid Factory collection. Also, we’re not crazy about the design of the Vendor Droid. It truly looks like they have LEGO heads on a C-3PO body. These droids are only sold singly for $12.99 each. Disney didn’t offer two-packs for the protocol droids. If you’re a completist collector you’re going to have to shell out $272.79 just to complete all 21 unique head sculpts. This is no small change and it’s no wonder why there is such outrage that so many collectors can’t get these parts. You do get some cool packaging to complete your Build A Droid. You’ll receive a plastic clamshell and well as a cardboard insert that briskly highlights the Droid Factory as well as provides quick art to the “handmade” figures. You also will receive an A through Z and numbers decal sheet so that allows you to personalize your droids and give them a unique name and/or identification number. This is a great collection. We hope more are on the way!
