If you asked a sampling of male collectors what their favorite vintage Kenner Star Wars figure was as a kid, you might hear the name of Greedo pop up more often than not. He is symbolic of the Mos Eisley’s Chalmun’s Cantina, and we all witness him get fried right after he threatened Han Solo’s life. Kenner had very few reference materials when they designed the cantina aliens for the 1979 Star Wars line. We all now the drama surrounding the Blue Snaggletooth, but the same issues affected the accuracy of other Cantina greats including Hammerhead, Walrus Man and Greedo. To be fair, the Greedo action figure was the closest in authenticity to the onscreen character. And perhaps that’s the reason he resonated so loudly with us when we were children. Greedo upsized in the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line is an exciting release. Gentle Giant Ltd. faithfully replicated this figure by scanning an original 1979 Kenner figure and every last detail has been brought forth in this exciting enlarged scale. When things are directly scanned, there is less room for error. And thankfully Greedo has experienced an error free supersized update.
Greedo comes with the classic five points of articulation that the 1979 figure did. A swivel head is joined by swivel shoulders and swivel hips. Obviously you can’t attain and infinite array of poses with this amount of articulation, but a one-sixth scaled version of the classic Kenner figures isn’t about articulation. It’s all about intense homage paying and powerful nostalgia harkening back to the days when we were young kids having our own Star Wars adventures and battles in the backyard. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of Greedo is his packaging. A large but altered version of the original card back art have been recreated to serve as the backdrop for the figure. Because of the size of the figures, Gentle Giant needed to rework the card back and how the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures get placed in the packaging. It’s noticeable that it differs from the 3.75” line, but they have carry forward enough elements to make it feel like very little has been changed. The colors on Greedo are pretty much perfect. We’re especially impressed with the glossy green paint used for his hands. The 1979 3.75” figure had this shiny paint too so we’re impressed that they pay so closely to things like this for collectors.
