The biggest announcement from Hasbro in 2008 that put Star Wars fans in a tizzy almost to the point of making them inconsolable was that they would be creating action figures from The Clone Wars multimedia event as they actually appeared.... in animated style. You see, most Star Wars action figure collectors up to this point were used to Hasbro making realistic interpretations of the various characters from the 2003-2005 Clone Wars multimedia event, even including the animated Genndy Tartakovsky micro-series. The reasons for Hasbro taking this direction remains elusive even to this day. It was a risky move developing a “new format” for action figures, especially when what they were doing for so many years had been inordinately successful. Overall, the risk paid off and it held the title of the most successful boys’ line multiple times. Even though many collectors boycotted the television show and especially the action figure line were only hurting themselves. While there are some very sad things happening with the line in the 2012 calendar year, The Clone Wars line brought us some of the best Star Wars action figures money could ever buy. But even staunch supporters of the line felt small aches in their hearts because as The Clone Wars line got bigger and bigger, it made us all realize just how deeply we would get “behind” on realistically styled versions of these characters should Hasbro decide to go back and revisit them in this fashion.

Well, Hasbro did just that. And The Clone Wars characters have made their debut in The Vintage Collection basic figure line, something we are just too ecstatic about ourselves. Whether or not these new realistic interpretations will catch the attention of longstanding naysayers is not something we’ll predict, but we can tell you that the first figure, Anakin Skywalker, is one that excites us very much and we hope that Hasbro will consistently incorporate them each year in whatever basic figure line is at hand. He is based on his look of the 2008 TCW Anakin Skywalker (No. 1) figure. There certainly isn’t anything earthshattering about Anakin Skywalker quite honestly. Actually, it’s everything you’d expect it to be. But while it’s a great figure and we still love The Clone Wars line, we have to say we’re left with a bittersweet feeling that Hasbro didn’t take the realistic approach from the very beginning. We’re actually pulled in both directions with this dilemma. Perhaps we all will be able to appreciate the realistic styles of The Clone Wars figures since we’ll be seeing so few of them, but we hope Hasbro keeps the momentum going strong and that nothing will be a stumbling block in their path to prevent them from making more for us. Anakin Skywalker in particular is a very great way to start out this sub-line of figures. He has a great portrait and a highly detailed costume that is extremely thankful to the one we see in animated “mode” in the television series. It’s all here. Red pants, navy blue tunic, dark metallic shoulder/chest armor. Anakin Skywalker is truly visually brilliant.

Anakin Skywalker comes with 14 points of articulation. And we have to be candid with you and explain that before we even looked at the sculpt thoroughly, we checked to see how badly mismatched to the area they articulate. Would you believe that Hasbro got them all correctly done this time? After years of making excuses in various fan site Q&A sessions, Hasbro now has no excuse to miss this again. It IS possible. Don’t believe otherwise! As much as we love to not see glaring color clashes between figure and articulation point, it makes us feel slightly like treating Anakin Skywalker badly for being treated so royally by Hasbro especially since they’ve made bad joint color mistakes on Kithaba (VC56) and Luke Skywalker (Hoth Outfit) (VC95). (We are being tongue-in-cheek for those of you without discernment.) Anakin’s skirt is constructed from multilayered soft-goods. For the most part they look alright, but every once in a while when you’re posing him the soft-goods pop out of their drape a little and it can look a little bit too wonky. Anakin seems every so slightly too thin, but he is very well proportioned and he really doesn’t look off in any way that matters. He comes with a fully lit lightsaber and a lightsaber hilt. It’s nice getting the hilt as an additional accessory, but Hasbro neglected to drill a hole in the belt to attach it to the figure. That makes us a little bit sad inside. In summary, we are very excited to finally see realistically styled The Clone Wars characters. We bet if Hasbro starts with some clones next that Star Wars collectors everywhere will go crazy for them. Rex next please, Hasbro!
