Having spent his life battling the forces of evil, Qui-Gon Jinn squares off against his most sinister enemy yet – Darth Maul – in an epic lightsaber duel inside the Theed power generator.

The five main characters in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace each received a minimum of three differently styled action figures in the line. When it came to Qui-Gon Jinn, third time was his charm as the best of all his action figures came last. Called Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master), this time Hasbro has developed an action figure with an acceptably light action-oriented pose with a fantastic likeness and flawless scale. Aside from minimal articulation, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) enters the Episode I basic figure line and essentially makes all previous releases obsolete. The figure’s packaging boasts a “NEW” callout, but what Hasbro perhaps should have advertised instead is that they really nailed this characters likeness and made what will be a standout action figure for years to come. Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) is a tremendous upgrade to the previous versions Hasbro has released. Still, collectors have been so focused on getting more articulation with their action figures that we wonder if they’ll overlook the major steps of improvement Hasbro has made with detail and sculpting here. Let’s take a look at what sets Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) apart from the others.

Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) may have flailing arms, but his head sculpt is really good. Keep in mind that this is meant to represent an action-oriented version of the character. His hair is blowing and his arms have been posed in a way that really make sense once you have them holding the included lightsaber. It’s only when you pose this figure that you realize just how great it looks. Check out our image gallery and see what can be accomplished thanks to this well thought out action figure. Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) has a great center of gravity and can maintain balance very well. No matter how you pose him he won’t fall over and we always find this to be a tremendous benefit with any action figure. He comes with a soft-goods skirt and it absolutely helps with posing this figure. The hips aren’t encumbered and you’re free to move them as needed to ensure you have both of his feet flat on the ground for optimal balance. The soft-goods have been perfectly matched to the molded clothing and the texture of them feel realistic. It’s something we would like to see attributed to future Jedi action figures because they really allow freer movement when it comes to these figures’ articulation.

As far as accessories, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) comes with the aforementioned lightsaber which fits into both hands well. The surprise accessory here however is the comlink. This tiny accessory has been brilliantly sized and sculpted and Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) can hold it really well in both hands too. But more importantly, Hasbro has tooled a nub on the back of his belt where the comlink can be stowed when not in use. It’s a small little detail, but we believe he looks amazing because if it. Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) clearly offers a little bit more to the collector than previous versions. A soft-goods outer robe would have been the icing on the cake here, but that obviously wasn’t part of Hasbro’s plans with this figure. As with all Episode I action figures, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) comes with a CommTech chip which when activated speaks lines from the film, but by voice actors and not the original cast. In a curious move, Hasbro revised the card back and removed the printed dialogue of the CommTech chip probably for aesthetic reasons. (All that text did come across a little unseemly.) Part of one of the final waves of the Episode I line, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) was a difficult figure to lock down for collectors as distribution became deadlocked.
