Proving his impressive flying capabilities and natural leadership qualities during the battle of Taanab, Lando is appointed General in charge of the attack on the second Death Star.

What’s increasingly difficult to do is to compare the original vintage Kenner figures to their modern counterparts. Sometimes vast improvements are evident, but other figures, like this Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) for example, is so good on so levels but royally fails in one major way; superhuman proportions; that it almost doesn’t seem fair to make any comparison at all. There is no doubt in our minds that Kenner/Hasbro had every intention to make 1998’s POTF2 [FF/TKC] Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) figure leaps and bounds better than its 1985 vintage Kenner counterpart, but there is little doubt that this wasn’t accomplished in the slightest. It just didn’t happen. In fact, the 1985 POTF Lando Calrissian (general Pilot) still stands out as one of the vintage era’s finest accomplishments to the point that it’s going to be pretty darn hard to beat in this era of collecting. With a body sculpt and likeness that didn’t seem possible in the 80s, and a soft-goods fabric cape that we doubt we’ll ever see remotely similar in the modern era, Kenner/Hasbro were immediately at a disadvantage to better this character in the modern action figure line.

What they did accomplish however is bettering some of the details. While there is no soft-goods cape this time around, we have to credit Kenner/Hasbro with the effort that went into making it look like fabric: from the score marks, folds, pattern in the fabric to the highly detailed clasp around the front of the neck. The drape is also beautiful for a plastic molded accessory. It’s easily removable and Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) looks great with our without it. Well, this is only partially true. We should probably talk about our disdain for the muscular body. For 1998 this is so passé at this point. it’s time to start focusing on realism. But if you can overlook his broad chest, once again Kenner/Hasbro proves their commitment to detail. Just ogle the sculpt from head to toe, front and back, and you will see how much they paid attention to the details. The ranking badge, the holster and gun and the ornaments on his general’s gear just looks absolutely fantastic. We’ll guarantee that you’ll be impressed too. It probably goes without saying, but modern Star Wars collectors are perhaps most interested in seeing the final 15 vintage Kenner action figures updated to modern status. And we’re making impressive headway. But the final version of Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) may leave collectors wishing for a little bit more.

In addition to the removable cape, Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) also comes with what we’ll call an “off screen” blaster pistol. It’s a pretty cool gun and fits into his hands very nicely. The “screen accurate” blaster pistol is permanently sculpted into his holster, so you won’t be able to remove that one. Thankfully Hasbro has given kids and collectors another option with the additional gun included here. With all The Power Of The Force “2” figures, Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) also suffers from huge hands. This is a trait inherent to most figures in this line which is a shame. What is so interesting is that this figure was part of the first wave of the Freeze Frame line. It included Bespin Luke Skywalker and Endor Rebel Soldier, both of which don’t suffer terribly from steroidal proportions. It’s interesting that Kenner/Hasbro didn’t follow suit with Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) because this is a figure that could have really benefitted from the new approach. This figure comes with a pretty cool Freeze Frame action slide and is only available in this style of packaging. This pack-in premium was eagerly embraced by the collecting community and has quickly become most collectors’ mission to secure all of the Freeze Frame action slides. Be sure to add Lando Calrissian (In General's Gear) to your list. It’s definitely fun to see the modern version of the beautiful classic Kenner one, but we know more tweaking is needed before we’re satisfied.
