Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) - POTJ - Basic

A Qui-Gon Jinn is a Jedi devoted to maintaining order and justice in the galaxy. He, like most Jedi, feels it is his duty to pass on what he has learned to the next generation of Jedi. He does so by taking a Padawan to mentor. During the training process, Qui-Gon often wears his Jedi training gear for protection when sparring with his trainee.

Multiple artists were commissioned to create illustrative concepts of the characters and worlds that would be part of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was these sketches that brought us Qui-Gon Jinn. Interestingly, the earliest suggested drawings of him ended up looking nothing like his final onscreen character. In the earliest stages, Qui-Gon Jinn wore armored gear. However, George Lucas felt that this didn’t accurately reflect the look of a Jedi, so it was determined that muted robes of brown and tan would befit these characters the best. As a result, Qui-Gon Jinn’s costume didn’t end up looking all that differently from Obi-Wan Kenobi’s costume from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Hasbro believed that collectors would be interested in action figures based on the original concept art. And they were right. As a result, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) was created and loosely based on Qui-Gon Jinn’s concept art.

The biggest difference separating the concept art version of Qui-Gon Jinn from the action figure is that Hasbro decided to use a likeness of actor Liam Neeson for the action figure. It’s basically an interpretation of what the character in Episode I would look like had he been dressed in the costume of the concept art. He is an interesting action figure for sure, but we honestly would have preferred it a bit more if Hasbro decided to go with an artistically interpreted portrait instead of “Qui-Gon Jinn from Episode I with a new body” action figure. Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) is actually a nicely sculpted action figure. Although we would have preferred the concept portrait, Hasbro did a fine job adding details that weren’t present on the concept sketches to make the action figure feel more realistic and natural. Details in the upper chest and especially the collar have been designed with great care to look like this would normally fit into the Star Wars universe.

Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) comes with six points of articulation. These points include a swivel head, two swivel shoulders, a swivel waist and two swivel hips. This isn’t a ton of articulation, but it’s definitely enough for what this figure needs. Because this action figure’s origins stem from art, it makes sense if the action figure was statuesque in some way to keep that flame alive. Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) comes with a green lit lightsaber, very similar to the ones included with the Episode I action figures. He looks great posed with it and despite the minimal articulation, you can attain a decent number of poses wielding his weapon. In general, Qui-Gon Jinn (Jedi Training) is an action figure that looks great and has just the right number features to satisfy us, so we believe similar feelings will resonate with other collectors. We also hope that Hasbro keeps concept art action figures in the line because they really provide an enhancement to an already fantastic basic figure line.
