There aren’t too many ways Sideshow Collectibles can amortize the cost unique body types for characters like Darth Vader and Yoda unless they can come up with new and interesting takes on them. Yoda is identical throughout the Original Trilogy and Darth Vader is almost the same throughout as well, save for his unique look in Episode IV. But making these characters in the 1:6 Scale Figure line is expensive. (It's necessary to amortize costs because it’s quite expensive to make these all-new molds.) It’s simple for them to play catch up with clone troopers since they all use the same body, but when a form is unique, they have to go back to the drawing board to develop an all-new body type which incurs dreadful tooling costs. When it came to Yoda, well, that’s pretty much what they did with their first ever 1:6 Scale Figure based on a Star Wars holiday greeting card. In an effort to help pay for the wonderful Yoda (Jedi Mentor) 1:6 Scale Figure mold, Sideshow Collectibles now released Holiday Yoda, a figure with an obvious niche audience and a one that should appeal to all those Star Wars collectors who are fans of the beautiful artwork of Ralph McQuarrie. Hasbro actually beat Sideshow Collectibles to the punch long before the arrival of this 1:6 Scale Figure. In 2003, long before Sideshow Collectibles was sublet the Hasbro 12” scale license to produce figures of their own in this scale, Hasbro released an online exclusive through the Star Wars Fan Club that was well-received by all collectors. But now it’s Sideshow Collectibles’ turn and they rocked it out of the park.

Now that Sideshow brings this concept into the one-sixth scale line in almost the same exact fashion Hasbro did in 2003, there’s more to love now than ever thanks to amazing articulation and even better soft-goods and accessories. Not many people have reported on this, but we’ve noticed that Yoda comes with a slightly revised portrait. Maybe this was required to better fit the molded Santa hat to hit head, but the most noticeable trait that makes it unique is the “bend” in his left ear. The Yoda (Jedi Mentor) 1:6 Scale Figure from the Order Of The Jedi collection lacks this detail or nuance. Sideshow expertly crafted a miniature Santa suit that fits Yoda perfectly, from head to toe. Expertly fitted, the cuffs stop right at the wrists and both the wrists and the collar are lined with white faux fur and have a rich and luxurious texture. Yoda clearly knows how to pick the finest of threads for his wardrobe. The included accessories are excellent too. Holiday Yoda comes with a “real” ball and alphabet block. Four of the sides of the block spell, you guessed it, Y-O-D-A with the other two simply sporting solid green circles. And the sculpted toy stack is mesmerizing to the eyes. It’s all one piece and fits into a soft-goods drawstring sack that cinches, but the toys that make up this lump are finely detailed and include a doll, drum, horn and several wrapped presents among other things. It’s quite a work of art indeed!

Perhaps the “best” part of Holiday Yoda is the packaging. Well, maybe it's not the best part, but it runs a close second. Sideshow Collectibles’ art department came up with a brilliant look for the box. Reminiscent of Christmas paper that your parents (meaning parents of those Star Wars collectors who grew up in the seventies and eighties) and grandparents grew up with from yesteryear. It has a retroactive feel to it and it beautifully adorned with crosshairs, TIE fighters, X-wing fighters, Galactic Empire emblems and Rebel Alliance emblems. But you won’t pick up on that instantly as they initially catch your eyes as Christmas ornament shapes and the like. It’s clever to say the least. Even the TO/FROM label has a classic look to it as does the decorative bow the “wraps” around the box. We just love it. Hopefully Sideshow Collectibles has set a precedent with Holiday Yoda and hopefully more will be planned for future holiday seasons. They have many ideas to choose from. Just Google the artwork of Ralph McQuarrie and just see how many options they have. Holiday Yoda may not be the must-have collectible for your collection since it’s something that is intended to decorate your home only once a year, but fans of Sideshow and Yoda will have reason(s) to pick this up. Happy holidays to all!
