From the planet Gamorr, the Gamorrean species consists of brutish, porcine humanoids who maintain a feudal level of technology and tolerate a remarkable amount of violence in their everyday activities. Interstellar procedures programs for visiting Gamorr consist of one line: DO NOT VISIT GAMORR.

While Gamorreans have been introduced to modern blaster and weapon technology, they prefer to hack and slash with axes, swords and maces. They only use modern weaponry when off-planet. Most Gamorreans have green skin, pig-like snouts and yellowed tusks protruding from jowled cheeks. These complement the small, yellow horns the Gamorreans have growing from the top of their heads. Jabba the Hutt was known to use dim-witted Gamorreans as enforcers and bodyguards, outfitting them with leather and metal uniforms.

Sideshow Collectibles is really going to town on their Scum & Villainy collection in recent history. It seems as if they focus on a certain sub-collection each year and now is the time for lots of varied scum and villainy in their very popular 1:6 Scale Figure line. With so many creatures and species throughout the Star Wars universe, it makes sense that we start to get some of them in 1:6 Scale Figure form. And it’s really happening and it’s extremely exciting. Back in 2003, Hasbro released a Kay Bee Toys exclusive Gamorrean Guard 12" Figure in the Star Wars "Saga" line. There was no mistaking that it was a Gamorrean Guard and it had a passable likeness despite some out of scale proportions (like the much too large arms for example). Although the paint job was good in approach (great shadowing and texture), the final colors were off by quite a few shades and gave the Gamorrean Guard a very pale appearance. And due to the inherent mixed media of this character’s costume, Hasbro was very limited on what details they could and could not include within his very unique costume. Fast forward eight years later and now Sideshow picked up where Hasbro left off to develop a remarkable interpretation of this likeable porcine security guard of Jabba’s palace. The Sideshow Collectibles Gamorrean Guard is fantastic. He comes with a newly developed body (specific for this species of course) and Sideshow created a costume that couldn’t be better in our own estimation. It’s truly a special 1:6 Scale Figure. While there may be a few small things that we would have wished Sideshow approached differently, our overall summation of this high end collectible is that it is an impressive piece and one which you should personally own, 1:6 Scale Figure collector or not.

The Gamorrean Guard is an all-new figure. It’s unfortunately been rare in Sideshow’s Star Wars career that they’ve developed a body type specific for one figure. This obviously increases cost and severely limits how many diverse characters can be made from the sculpt and released into the 1:6 Scale Figure line. But with the strong following the Gamorrean Guard has, he seemed to be the perfect candidate to be produced in the 1:6 Scale and format. Sideshow really spared no expense to create a movie-authentic figure here. The likeness and shape is spot on and the color of the skin is flawless. The hand attachments are rubbery and makes you think this is exactly what the costume must had felt like. The outfit is spectacular as it has been cut from multiple fabrics to create various textures and drapes. And the fur skirt looks magnificent and is probably the icing on the cake as far as this figure is concerned. With a new body type, fans and collectors were concerned with the amount of articulation the Gamorrean Guard would come with and the end result ended being a blessing. The Gamorrean Guard is thankfully very articulated and is ball-jointed in the neck, shoulders, wrists, hips and ankles. And the figure also has swivel joints in the biceps. Sideshow Collectibles expressed the reason why the figure has no articulation in the knees and elbows and the reason is that they feared the sculpture of the figure would be too compromised by any included joint. And they are absolutely corrected. On this size scaled figure it would have been hard to disguise those joints. And besides, the figure has flawless balance because of it. (And it’s the only 1:6 Scale Figure to date to come without an action figure stand.)

Some collectors have been put off with the Gamorrean Guard’s blue eyes. And we have to admit that we are empathetic to their complaints. At the same rate, we understand Sideshow’s intents for doing this. Just like their Gamorrean Guard 1:1 Life Size Bust, they are replicating screen-accurate version of the Gamorrean Guard. This means that their interpretation includes a man behind a mask, hence the blue eyes. While we applaud them for this attention to detail, we’re not sure how necessary it is in this smaller scale. It’s something that should be there for a 1:1 collectible, but we surmise that Sideshow could have forgone this attention to detail on a 1:6 Scale Figure. Hasbro’s stunning 2010 TVC Gamorrean Guard (VC21) action figure doesn’t have blue eyes and are solid black instead. This is what we as viewers of the film saw. We may have gotten a glace of blue eyes somewhere within Return Of The Jedi, but we believe the intent was to see the dark shadows of the yes and not make out the color of the irises. Despite not really favor this very accurate attention to detail, the Gamorrean Guard score big points with us. We’re thankful that he includes a ton of articulation without being super-articulated because he really doesn’t need to be. Now since Hasbro has opened the can of worms by making the first Jabba’s palace alien in years, we hope they will continue the trend and make some other awesome characters like Squid Head, Ree-Yees and Wooof in 1:6 Scale Figure form that have never been attempted to date. The Gamorrean Guard seems to only be the beginning. We hope we are right.
