As the droid army leader in the Clone Wars, General Grievous inspires fear throughout the Republic.

What a totally missed opportunity the Galaxy Of Adventures toy line is. It was the perfect time for Hasbro to develop a semi-competing animated line against Disney’s Star Wars Toybox line. The Toybox line is approximately 6”-7” scale. Imagine what a dedicated 3.75” line would have been like. Instead, Hasbro dug deeply into their tooling archives and picked some of the simplest Star Wars action figures produced and compiled a line of action figure in tubular packaging to support the Galaxy Of Adventures shorts of the StarWars.com YouTube channel. General Grievous is part of wave 3 in the line, and because Hasbro has not produced a viable 3.75” General Grievous action figure in years, they resorted to an older Mission Series figure that might have helped up well today if Hasbro painted the figure better. Still, we much rather would have seen Hasbro tool all-new figures for this line because animated versions of these main character would have been the best route to take. It doesn’t cost Hasbro much money to tool 5POA action figures, so why couldn’t they develop animated versions of these characters to more accurately support the shorts on YouTube? General Grievous looks very different in the miniature comic included when compared to the action figure paired with it. That’s unfortunate.

What adds insult to injury with the Galaxy Of Adventures General Grievous figure is that we haven’t had a 3.75” version of General Grievous on the market in quite some time and Hasbro decided to go with an old figure. From a sculpting perspective, this version of General Grievous is fairly nice, but they painted him terribly, and ultimately, he is one of the worst looking figures in the line, especially with the paint operations on the head sculpt. Imagine getting an animated version of General Grievous, that matches the colors of the character seen in the included miniature comic book. That would have gone over hugely with collectors. But instead we get a figure release a half decade ago, with very few changes, and it’s a very disappointing release. Loosely based on his appearance from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, General Grievous comes outfitted with a lit blue lightsaber and a lit green lightsaber and comes with seven points of articulation. Four lightsabers are Grievous’ signature choice of weaponry, but this figure’s arms don’t split so four can’t be utilized with this figure. As we’ve mentioned, the paint operations are rough on this figure, but they look the best on the figure body and extremities. But we won’t give the figure a pass with its deco. Hasbro should have done better here.

When Hasbro released 2014’s SW [DV/ROTS] Obi-Wan Kenobi And General Grievous (Utapau) (MS08) Mission Series two-pack, the response was mixed. At the time, many considered General Grieovous the saving grace of the set, and if painted beautifully he might still hold up well. But it’s the poor paint operations of the Galaxy Of Adventures version that keep it from becoming an acceptable action figure. Hasbro has made incredible strides forward when it comes to the facial deco of action figures. Why are they regressing with General Grievous? We still feel that General Grievous has a decent sculpt. What’s nice is that although he comes with seven points of articulation, he can hold his pose effortlessly and has a shockingly good paint job elsewhere in the sculpt. You may have to futz with his legs a bit once out of the package. They got a little twisted on our sample, but the figure has a wonderful center of gravity, even with the “walking-forward” pose. General Grievous would have been served best by getting a cape or a droid blaster, but the Galaxy Of Adventures line doesn’t take accessories into account. Hasbro did a great job coloring the “bone” portions and “meta;” portions of the character well, but the figure needs more tweaking before we’re satisfied.
