Darth Maul and his double-bladed lightsaber prove a fearsome challenge to Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the trio battle it out in the Theed generator complex. With hopes for victory nearly gone, Obi-Wan leaps from the brink of certain death and uses his fallen master's weapon to cut the evil Sith Lord in two!

Well, this is an interesting set. But we’re not sure if we needed it. In 2000, as the Episode I toy line faded away into obscurity, Hasbro continued to pump out some great and some not-so-great releases. The Final Lightsaber Duel (Darth Maul Vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi) might be one of the Episode I sets that didn’t meet expectation levels. Pairing Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi based on the final moments of their lightsaber duel in the Theed complex, the two-pack does offer some newness and scene specificity, but when you are boiling it down, we’re getting ANOTHER Darth Maul figure and ANOTHER Obi-Wan Kenobi figure. We need to ask if they’re needed at this point in the game. Both all-new sculpts and posed in scene-specific positions, The Final Lightsaber Duel (Darth Maul Vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi) two-pack may have some importance in your Episode I collection. Oh, and of course you also get an environmental display stand which interacts with other items in the Episode I collection. So this may be of us after all.

Darth Maul is an all-new figure, and quite frankly, he looks rather excellent. Do you remember the moment in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace when Obi-Wan Kenobi severs him in half with Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber? That’s the posture and expression Darth Maul has on his face. Yes, we’re talking about a very moment-specific pose for Darth Maul which eliminates most of the play time you can have with these two figures. Darth Maul comes with a neck with minimal movement, and it’s inhibited in ways we don’t understand, but there aren’t too many other poses you can achieve from this figure. It’s all right because we have plenty of Darth Maul action figures already in our collection. Darth Maul splits into three separate pieces: upper body, skirt and lower body (cod section and legs). This design allows us to recreate the final moments of the film that Darth Maul is alive and when he plummets to his death. The face sculpt is excellent, and the paint operations are adequate. Hasbro did well here.

Obi-Wan Kenobi looks pretty good too. Not all of the CommTech Obi-Wan Kenobi figures have the functionality they need to wield lightsabers. This isn’t the case for the Obi-Wan Kenobi figure part of The Final Lightsaber Duel (Darth Maul Vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi two-pack. Hasbro designed him to wield a lightsaber. And he looks amazing doing so. Obi-Wan Kenobi is also an all-new figure. He comes with a resized head with a beautiful likeness and faithful likeness to what we see him express at this point in the film. Hasbro paid close attention and correctly included a lit version of Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber. We think Hasbro should have included Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber hilt, or perhaps Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber hilt too to give us a few more accessories to recreate the scene as perfectly as possible. But, that wasn’t part of the plan for this release. Overall, The Final Lightsaber Duel (Darth Maul Vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi) is a decent set. We get significantly enhanced versions of Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that’s enough for us to warrant a purchase.
