Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) with pop-up Lightsaber

General Analysis

Barrel-shaped DROID. Functions as a sophisticated computer-repair and information retrieval robot. R2-D2 communicates through electroic sounds and uses C-3PO as his interpreter.

I was shocked to see a “new” R2-D2 action figure hanging from the pegs when I found THE POWER OF THE FORCE line on my 11th birthday in Toys R Us. It looked just like the previous R2-D2 action figures Kenner made in the past, but the figure’s name boasted the “with pop-up Lightsaber” feature, and I knew I had to have him. The packaging was confusing, however. It featured R2-D2 getting blasted inside the doorway of the Endor bunker, yet the packaging referred to his hidden lightsaber feature which took place in the first act of RETURN OF THE JEDI. It ultimately didn’t matter to me, but it was something I noticed as a very young collector. I felt the lightsaber accessory was too big and bulky, but I also understood why the new shape was necessary for the action figure. And that was to ensure its play feature would function properly. As you turn Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) (with pop-up Lightsaber)’s dome, Luke’s lightsaber incrementally rises until it is out of the dome enough to pull out for use. In retrospect, I always felt that Kenner should have taken this opportunity to release a new version of R2-D2 by tooling an all-new sculpt, but they felt the standard base figure was still modern enough to reuse. The COLLECTOR COIN that came with Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) (with pop-up Lightsaber) was generic enough to apply across the Original Trilogy. And I loved collecting them as a kid. Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) (with pop-up Lightsaber) is not one of my favorite figures from THE POWER OF THE FORCE line, but I do appreciate the effort taken by Kenner to try and make R2-D2 uniquely different from past version.
