Bib Fortuna

General Analysis

I was immediately enamored of Bib Fortuna the first time I saw him onscreen in a tiny movie theater in Freehold, NJ one day in May of 1983. The tentacles from his head were some of the grossest features I had ever seen on an alien, and since he didn’t speak English in RETURN OF THE JEDI, I thought it added to his scary persona. One of the many aliens I desperately want to add to my Star Wars action figure collection, I received him as a gift for Christmas 1983. I set him up with my Jabba The Hutt playset, and he became one of my many favorite action figures that year. Much like Squid Head, Bib Fortuna came layered with multiple parts. His beautiful suede-like robe was soft and luxurious. He also came with a rubber belt that also functioned as his chest armor. And his braided staff was specific to the Kenner line, and not seen in the film at all. Kenner sculpted his mouth open, showing all of his jagged teeth. And for me, they nailed his expression perfectly. His pink eyes and mouth added a great deal to his bizarre features. And I loved how his teal-colored shirt and pants added the necessary color which complimented his pale skin color. We need a super-articulated update. We have some nice Hasbro Bib Fortuna figures, but none are definitive.
