Luke Skywalker

General Analysis

Although my first taste of Star Wars “collecting” was in kindergarten in 1979, thanks to a friend's Luke Skywalker: X-wing Fighter Pilot figure, I quickly became obsessed with all of the Star Wars action figures Kenner released. Every birthday and Christmas for most of the 80s focused on them. In a relatively short couple of years, I had a healthy dose of Star Wars “men,” as I called them. One of those earlier figures was, of course, Luke Skywalker from A New Hope. I so desperately wanted to recreate all of the scenes from the film. Although I hadn't seen Episode IV until the early 80s, once I did, I had to recreate those amazing scenes! To recreate the Death Star chasm swing, I ingenuously “borrowed” a jack from my Jacks set and then tied a string to it to make my own grappling hook. My little creation worked better than you might have expected. For the "swing to freedom," I tied the string (with attached jack) to the curtain rod which was affixed equidistantly from my desk and record player stand in my bedroom. The jack worked like a charm, and I was able to swing Luke Skywalker (and Princess Leia Organa, but mostly just Luke Skywalker) back and forth until I was bored. But frankly, I rarely got bored. Many years later as a young college student I would pick up the many variations including multiple shades of brown hair and the double-telescoping holy grail. But I probably received the most enjoyment from my $.99 or $1.99 figure that I received for my birthday. Good times.
