By the end of 1996, Kenner was in full swing to produce some of the greatest Star Wars heroes, villains and creatures from the Original Trilogy. Just in time for Christmas that year, collectors were treated to a diverse hive of scum and villainy, protagonist and antagonist in The Power Of The Force “2” line. After a few strong waves, Kenner began producing characters in a similar matter to the way they did in the late seventies: the more obscure, the better. Of course, those “blink and you miss it” aliens and whatnot will forever live in infamy thanks to their prevalence in the toy line. We really didn’t need to see these characters in the film in order to want them as toys. It has been one of the reasons why those who didn’t grown up during the vintage Kenner era will ever be able to comprehend why a Hammerhead or R5-D4 action figure is more important than a Luke Skywalker action figure. We digress. The final wave of 1996 included the infamous Rodian bounty hunter, Greedo. And most felt that the wait to get him in the line was much too long. The time had arrived to give your Han Solo action figures a little more trouble.

Greedo was a breath of fresh air in The Power Of The Force “2” line, but we’d be lying if we claimed he was perfect. Clearly, Kenner had more tools at their disposal in 1996 as compared to 1979, so for the first time ever we’ve received a faithful representation as an action figure. We have to take exception with it however because it isn’t perfect. Firstly, his head is much too small. This pea-sized interpretation has us thrown off in all honesty. Because this was a mask in the film, it should be larger and fit around a human head. But the size of Greedo’s head is about the same exact size as any human character in this line, so clearly there’s a size issue here. Greedo also seems a bit too light in color. But then again, Chalmun’s cantina is a dark and dreary place, so maybe that’s not a reason to cast criticism in the path of this figure. The other thing we’re not crazy about with Greedo is his posture. He seems a little twisted like a pretzel. We wish he came with a straighter stature than what Kenner gave him.

As with most POTF2 figures, Greedo comes with one screen accurate accessory and one “off screen” accessory. The Rodian blaster is smaller and fits well in both of his hands thanks to “support lines” that glide along his long fingers and hold the gun in place. The larger blaster rifle also comes with the same lines to help secure it. Both guns can be held at the same time and will allow for extra play value if you’re so inclined. Despite Greedo’s awkward pose, he has no trouble standing unassisted. It’s really a shame that Kenner didn’t give him a less angled pose, but, oh well, whatever. The paint operations on Greedo are very nicely done. We’re still on the fence about the accuracy of his pastel colors, but we’re willing to let it go and assume that Kenner has more reference materials than we do in order to make these action figures. Greedo is only the beginning for a long list of cantina aliens that Kenner will be making for us in the future. If they tweak a few things, they clearly have the ability to make some great action figures.
