A trained warrior desperate to escape his past, Finn is plunged into adventure as his conscience drives him down a heroic, but dangerous, path.

A new era of Star Wars is upon us and Episode VII ushers in a whole new cast of heroes and villains. As long time collectors, it’s easy to get jaded about anything new. And the introduction of Finn as seen in the trailer was responsible for setting off one ignorant comment after the next. Thankfully, more well-rounded individuals have the ability to look beyond race, class, sex and creed of any Star Wars characters; so for the bulk of us it was pure joy that we caught a glimpse of a main protagonist in The Force Awakens. His role in the Sequel Trilogy must be pretty significant, as many toys were produced by Hasbro based on his character. While those who avoided spoilers know little to nothing about Finn, we imagine that everyone can admit that we’re looking forward to seeing just how he impacts the Star Wars universe. Hasbro ensured that Finn (Jakku) was slotted for the first wave of The Black Series [Phase III] line. We’re happy to report that Hasbro has produced a rather fine action figure of the character in their ever growing 6” action figure line. With the Build A Weapon and Armor Up figures relegated to five points of articulation, Hasbro goes all out with the TBS6 version and we’d place bets that most of you are going to be pleased with the final action figure.

Finn (Jakku), like so many other The Black Series [Phase III] figures, comes with an impressive 28 points of articulation. Although the articulation is represented across 16 areas of the action figure’s body, the use of premium ball-jointed articulation makes this figure able to be positioned in just about any way you wish. That’s a wonderful thing. Visually, Finn (Jakku) is immediately reminiscent of Luke Skywalker as he appeared during the Yavin IV ceremony at the conclusion of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. That yellow jacket he’s wearing, along with the black shirt underneath, immediately calls to some type of Rebel Alliance academy gear. We have seen some samples with the jacket shell removed, but on our sample it is glued tightly to the figure. We’re not going to remove the jacket if it wasn’t intended to be removed. As a result, we won’t be calling the jacket shell an accessory here. The head sculpt of Finn (Jakku) is excellent. But it has been excellent across every scale we have seen of him in the Hasbro line. Hasbro is certainly not struggling with attaining a screen accurate likeness to the actor. So far we’re thoroughly impressed with what Hasbro has been offering, aside from the lack of articulation the smaller figures have.

Finn (Jakku) comes with a single blaster rifle, but the detail on it is tremendous. And both the figure and the accessory have beautiful paint jobs. Hasbro has definitely raised the bar as far as paint operations are concerned from the horrific figures we received even just a year ago. In our opinion, almost every figure from wave 1 of The Black Series [Phase III] line is painted wonderfully. Sure, there are one or two imperfections here and there, but overall we have to say that we’re thoroughly impressed. Even in Finn (Jakku)’s case, Hasbro painted sand/dust/dirt on his shoes and lower pant legs to recreate that aspect on the character. We’re very pleased. If we had to draw attention to any negatives, we’d have to address that Hasbro still isn’t taking full advantage of this format, at least not consistently. A nice large “accessory” like the droid packed in the Rey (Jakku) & BB-8 set, or the interchangeable hands given with Poe Dameron, or the extra head sculpt provided with Princess Leia Organa (Boushh) are all things that Hasbro need to do more consistently with this line. We’re not saying every 6” figure needs to have ten or more accessories, but certainly a single weapon seems stingy at best. If they can just give us more value for each $20 purchase, we’d say that this thing is pretty locked down now.
