Gentle Giant Ltd has developed an incredible Boba Fett [Episode VI] Mini Bust based on his appearance from Return of The Jedi. It’s been relegated to a Convention Exclusive only at the moment. But knowing Gentle Giant Ltd. as well as we do, you may expect to see this released a little bit differently for the general market. Coming with some basic but authentic modularity, it can be said that they have nailed a tremendous likeness of the Mandalorian bounty hunter in a very special collectible format for those collectors that have been with them since the beginning. (Like ourselves for example.) The piece is rewarding to own, that much is sure. But the price it’s commanding is a bit too much to handle. While gorgeous, there isn’t enough here to justify the elevated MSRP. From head to midriff, the Boba Fett [Episode VI] Mini Bust truly shines and perhaps most importantly has a feature never before added to a Mini Bust until now (you’ll have to keep reading for more information on that) that we hope they utilize on future releases. Fully compatible with the rest of the Mini Busts already released in the line, Boba Fett [Episode VI] is a dream come true for fans of this bounty hunter and especially those fond of Return Of The Jedi.

The 2003 Boba Fett Mini Bust based on his appearance from The Empire Strikes Back and this Mini Bust based on his appearance from Return Of The Jedi are separated by a decade long back unbelievably. It’s quite surprising that a character as popular as Boba Fett wasn’t developed into every iteration already. Perhaps Gentle Giant Ltd. was cleverly building up the anticipation for another Boba Fett [Episode VI] Mini Bust. After all, the 2003 version commands a hefty premium on the aftermarket. And even though that version is limited to 7500 pieces, it still doesn’t seem that enough were produced. Therefore, we are quite surprised to see the 2013 San Diego Comic Con version of Boba Fett have an edition size of only 2500 pieces. While we’re not sold on deluxe packaging forgiving an escalated MSRP, we do have to say that the $149.99 that Gentle Giant Ltd. is expecting to make on this piece completely carve out a decent size of the Mini Bust buying population as out of their price range. It will be interesting to see if Gentle Giant Ltd. makes a non-modular version for general release. It wouldn’t make sense not to do that.

Boba Fett comes beautifully packaged in a tin that is wrapped in an overlapped sleeve showcasing Gentle Giant’s standard packaging artwork. You’ll find inside that Boba Fett comes in five separate pieces, one piece which is duplicated in the sense that it attaches to the same part on the Mini Bust (the left arm) but gives Boba Fett a completely different look. We must point out that for the first time ever, Gentle Giant Ltd. has added a metal ball-socket joint so the head has free movement. It’s most impressive! When fully assembled, Boba Fett looks sublime. The paint job, the sculpting, the battle-damage and pretty much everything about Boba Fett [Episode VI] is a complete success. We do have to be picky and comment that the rangefinder is a mild disappointment. Firstly, it’s too long and looks a tad out of scale to the Mini Bust. But secondly (and worse) is that it came curved and doesn’t stand completely upright when placed on the helmet. This feature of Boba Fett shouldn’t be flawed in this way so we find it to be a bit deflating. That being said, Boba Fett [Episode VI] is a long-awaited release for the Min Bust line. We don’t think it’s the best character to release as an exclusive (only if a standard release is coming down the road too), but it’s beautiful regardless.
