Snaggletooth was the very first Expanded Universe character period. But this title doesn’t come without its own fair share of controversy. While none of the cantina aliens released in the 1979 Kenner Star Wars action figure line had much accuracy at all, it was Snaggletooth who not only went through an intense metamorphosis as an action figure, but who card back artwork was based off of a character seen in The Star Wars Holiday Special and not Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. You know the story. Kenner didn’t have all of the necessary reference materials needed to develop a “screen accurate” version of Snaggletooth, so they had to use “common sense” to fill in this missing parts and erroneously created a creature who was too tall, too blue, had light colored skin and bright silver boots! Lucasfilm caught wind of the error pretty quickly and Kenner developed a revised version of Snaggletooth just in time for his carded release. Yet, this character was based on Snaggletooth’s appearance in The Star Wars Holiday Special instead of Episode IV, thus making him the very first action figure sourced to the Expanded Universe.

There are also plenty of arguments as to whom the Snaggletooth action figure is intended to represent anyway. His outfit is clearly based on the pone worn by Rachalt Hyst as seen in The Star Wars Holiday Special (and the card back art shows this character too). But the head sculpt more closely resembles the likenesses of brothers Takeel and Zutton both seen in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. While they used the wrong image for the card back, it is our belief that Snaggletooth was actually supposed to be Takeel. Others will have varying opinions about this and we will decidedly respect other perspectives on this matter, but that is who we have determined this character was intended to represent. Gentle Giant Ltd. released Snaggletooth [Blue] Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figure as a 2012 Convention Exclusive. It was also used for 2012’s Celebration VI exclusive too. It was only a matter of time that they released the general release (and subsequently corrected) version of Snaggletooth who is actually much shorter, wearing a red jumpsuit and has furry hands and feet (and no boots).

Snaggletooth is another welcomed addition to the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line. Just like the other cantina aliens developed for the line, Snaggletooth has been manufactured with a great deal of care so that every last detail and nuance has remained in place despite its much larger scale. For example Snaggletooth still comes with disproportionately long arms, his signature belt buckle and a head sculpt that now sports more a lot more gray this time around. Looking a bit more like a werewolf that a space jockey, the red version of Snaggletooth looks a lot more at home at the cantina than his earlier blue ancestor. Snaggletooth is just really another action figure that makes you recall the times of your childhood. To see him at this exaggerated scale makes you affectionately remember the times when life was simpler and less meant a whole lot more than it does today. Snaggletooth joins the other cantina aliens Greedo, Hammerhead and Walrus Man and completes a scene that we loved to play time and time again as young children. It’s a memory that has permeated our lives and stays with us forever.
