Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is a powerful leader in the Republic. Now he reveals the frightening truth: he is the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and his evil plans are about to destroy the Republic and the Jedi.

Sometimes you have to laugh with (not at) Hasbro for some of their efforts in the Revenge Of The Sith Deluxe line. While privy to some key elements of the film, not every last secret can be revealed and they have to use their creativity to complete concepts for toys they bring forth into the line. Perhaps one of the most laughable is Emperor Palpatine. Not only is the figure wearing the incorrect outfit (for the scene that the toy is seemingly based on), the method in which Palpatine/Sidious transforms from his “attractive” persona to the scarred evilness we come to know is completely in accurate. This Deluxe figure led Star Wars fans to believe that Emperor Palpatine could change back and forth from Chancellor Palpatine to Darth SIdious and back again. Well, that’s what we thought anyway. We’re glad we were quickly proved wrong when the film was released.

It’s a shame that Hasbro wasted this sculpt of Emperor Palpatine for the Deluxe line. If you thought action features were bad in the Revenge Of The Sith basic figure lineup, well then you’re going to be royally disappointed with the Deluxe line. There is an obtrusive lever that raises and lowers his arms while spinning his head 180 degrees in one direction to revealed the battle-damaged visage of Darth Sidious, courtesy of Mace Windu defending himself in a lightsaber/Force lightning battle. The shame here is that Emperor Palpatine is wearing his Senate gown when he announced that the Jedi had turned on him and ravaged his face in the scuffle. He was wearing different burgundy-colored robes during this battle. So the “handsome” Chancellor Palpatine face on this figure is completely inaccurate. Emperor Palpatine lacks charm and Hasbro really needs to find a way to reduce action features and increase articulation.

Emperor Palpatine is indeed not too much more than a salt or pepper shaker. His feet don’t even articulation. In fact, they make up part of the battery cover. There are two sets of holes in each sleeve. The upper pair are for his hands and the lower pair are for the Force lightning attachments. It’s quite humorous actually. One of the neater features however (which in retrospect has been completely wasted on this “action figure”) is the lights in his sleeves. When you activate the lever, the lower holes, by way of blue LED lights, activate to help recreate Force lightning attachments. It works nicely in the dark but hard to see in the light. We wish we could say that this figure looks good displayed, but its proportions are wonky and the non-damaged face of Palpatine is inaccurate. So we’ll have to wait for an update from Hasbro. Hopefully it will come sooner than later.
