Found on the desert planet Tatooine, dewbacks are large lizards used by the locals as mounts and beasts of burden. These flat-toothed creatures can be found hauling goods for merchants or moisture farmers, pulling Podracer parts to starting grids, or serving stormtrooper patrols assigned to the planet's Imperial garrison. A dewback is able to withstand the heat and dust that often leads to mechanical breakdown in modern high-tech conveyances.

If you could sum up the 1:6 scale Dewback in one word it would have to be BIG! Sideshow Collectibles first ventured outside of the 1:6 scale norm when they surprised everyone with the huge Jabba the Hutt and Throne environment. They took it to the next level with Yoda’s Hutt. Now they have ventured into a new arena that they simply call 1:6 Scale Related Products (although the official box description refers to it as a 1:6 scale figure). It’s fair to say that this is no figure, but an accessory, or even a statue with soft goods. That being said, it is a perfect addition to the squad of sandtroopers they have released to date. As a standalone product it is impressive, but displayed alongside the sandtrooper 1:6 figures it is fantastic! It adds a depth to the display of figures that you simply cannot achieve when they are just on a shelf by themselves. However, due to its size you will need more than a standard shelf to display the Dewback alongside the sandtroopers due to its size and weight. It’s hard to determine just which version of dewback Sideshow modeled this after. It most closely resembles the 1977 movie version with the exception of the hair, as seen in both the sandtrooper scene and the cantina scene. But, you also see small details from the The Phantom Menace version. This leads us to believe Sideshow modeled it as best they could (from what was seen) from A New Hope and ‘filled in the blanks’ with the The Phantom Menace reference material.

Dewback is beautifully sculpted in a walking pose, but not so bad that it looks out of place with the sandtroopers just standing around. Conversely, it also works well with a scene of sandtroopers in patrolling poses. The meandering pose captures the reptilian look you would expect these creatures to have, with details down to the individual scales of varying size and shape giving it an even more realistic look. Sideshow manages to capture the slightly closed eyes in a lazy, submissive look lending even more credence to the fact that these are beasts of burden for the sandtroopers of Tatooine. The overall color of Dewback is an olive drab, which may not match the original film version perfectly, but works very well. The sculpted muscles add an even more impressive look to the beast as it lumbers along with your squad. The one detail lacking from this dewback compared to the original film version is the fur around the neck area. Sideshow sculpted the fur on the top of the neck and down the back, but the original source photo shows a mass of hair that goes around the neck area as well. The fur also blends a bit too much with the olive drab, almost hiding it. However, none of this detracts from the overall beauty of this piece.

The accessories that come with Dewback are what give this a realistic overall feel. Four soft goods faux fur saddle bags easily attach to the sides of Dewback, while a pre-attached (yet detachable) roll-out shelter is mounted behind the saddle. Capping off the saddle is a nicely done faux fur saddle horn. Mounted perfectly to the snaffle bits, which sit realistically in the corners of the mouth, is a soft goods faux leather harness. This can either be used up around the saddle horn, or the bits swivel to allow the reins to be brought in front of Dewback to be used by a waiting sandtrooper. While not all of the harness is soft goods, the harness that is sculpted works well with the rest of the soft-goods harness and saddle. While a fully removable saddle would have been a nice touch, it likely would have made it harder for a sandtrooper figure to sit atop the beast. The sculpted saddle takes any issues of the saddle falling over or sliding to the side out of the equation for a worry-free mount. Also included is a sixteen inch long metal lance to equip your mounted sandtrooper. Being metal means there will be no issues with the lance warping over time, but it also means it is very heavy! The sandtrooper figure has a hard time hoisting this in any position that is not eventually bogged down by the weight. The Dewback itself is very light. The base, however, is very heavy! This adds a lot of stability to this large display piece, but also puts your muscles to the test when hoisting it high on a shelf! The details in the sand décor add to this piece. Instead of a generic base we get a small bit of the Tatooine desert with dewback footprints nicely formed in the surface. Overall this is a stellar addition to the Sideshow 1:6 scale line, and would look awesome alongside a landspeeder, assuming you have the room for such a display!
