Vintage Versus Modern Analysis Postponed Again (We Apologize)

Posted by Paul | January 31, 2012 at 08:33 PM ET |

Due to unforseen delays, we need to postpone our 2012 Vintage Versus Modern Analysis until March 1st. We have always posted this on the first of January but we've been inordinately busy with other things on the site. Please be sure to check back then as we look at the final few figures that need a modern update - and we'll have the information from Toy Fair to make the report even more thorough. If you want to get a head start or refresh your memory on where we left off, you can find our previous analyses under our SPECIAL REPORTS icon on the right hand side under the site navigation menu.

Bomb Squad Battle Packs: How Does That Sound?

Posted by Paul | January 31, 2012 at 08:08 PM ET |

Check out our Bomb Squad Trooper group photo on our Facebook page! Hasbro should have released a Battle Packs set of three of these figures and included their bombs! Bad misstep Hasbro! If you'd like to army build a group for your collection, get them from THIS AUCTION on eBay. They're very reasonable!

Visual Guide Update - Commander Bly (327th Star Corps) - SSC

Posted by Chuck | January 31, 2012 at 02:37 PM ET |

Today we are rolling out another Sideshow Collectibles Sixth Scale Enhanced Visual Guide: Commander Bly (327th Star Corps). The line has definitely blurred on which figure is the best Sideshow has produced, because it seems they hit it out of the park with each and every new figure they release! Commander Bly is no exception, and we rated it five stars without a doubt! You can click below for our detailed visual analysis, and then read our Research Droids Review for a full in depth review of this figure!

Commander Bly (327th Star Corps) - Sideshow Collectibles

R2-N3 Versus R2-A6: A Visual Analysis

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2012 at 08:46 PM ET |

OK - no more emails! Here it is! We surrender! You've asked and we've answered. It seems that ALL of you want to know how much alike the new R2-N3 (from the Royal Starship Droids Battle Packs) is to 2006's TSC Astromech Droid Pack Series II R2-A6 figure. They are quite different. Click through for the visual analysis.

January 30, 2012: Summarily An Epic Fail

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2012 at 08:05 PM ET |

Well, we had hoped for everyone to find what they needed with the new product launch today, but there are two words to sum up so many collectors' experiences: EPIC FAIL. TARGET has been the worst and they might as well stick their heads up their rear-ends. Out of six TARGET we visited over the course of the day, only one had half a case of The Clone Wars figures in stock and the rest had no idea what we were talking about. (Yes, Cody was all gone at that one store.) We do have to say that Toys R Us came through big time for us. We located no less than 11 cases of The Phantom Menace wave and counted 9 individual Darth Maul figures across all visits. And with buy 2 get one FREE, what more could you want? Walmart was a little better than TARGET, but they both need to get their acts together. JTA reader Andrew J. sends us a quick picture of his experience today. We feel for you Andrew, hopefully your stores will put the stuff out soon. Our friends and colleagues have been reporting the same experience all day too. Click through to see what awaited him.

Ode To Joy: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Royal Astromech Droids

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2012 at 05:14 PM ET |

We rarely like to alert you to upcoming Research Droids Reviews early (although many of you have figured out how to do that on your own - daily). But in this case we have to make another exception. This has got to be the best exclusive for 2012 (and it's still only January). Check out the Royal Starship Droids - Discover The Force - Battle Packs set from Walmart. Four Build A Droid figures, four colorful astromechs and four incredible figures including the first ever BAD R2-D2, the first time available R2-N6 and the last two (R2-B1 and R2-R9) for the first time are screen accurate. Review: Anakin Skywalker - SW [TPM 3D] - The Clone Wars (CW1)

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2012 at 01:32 AM ET |

Today is the official release day for the Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] line! Are buying new toys today? Opening day means Research Droids Reviews is going to look at the opening figure of The Clone Wars facet of this new line. Check out the new and improved Anakin Skywalker! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our Disqus comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via e-mail if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Most of you probably don't even need this courtesy reminder since so many stores disobeyed the street date, but we'd like to remind everyone that tomorrow (January 30, 2012) is the official day that the new 2012 Star Wars products get "released". We've also learned from a Walmart contact that the Naboo Royal Starship Droids and Mos Espa Arena Walmart exclusive Battle Packs as well as the 12 basic figures are not being shipped until the release date and may not show up at stores until around February 3rd. If you see them on eBay or at other second hand stores, they've come from the UK. A lot of people are looking for these, but we'd thought we'd let you know that they aren't out yet. Not even most of the online orders have been received yet from Walmart.com. (There have been a few exceptions with Site to Store orders.)

An Awesome Toys R Us Sale Just In Time For January 30th!

Posted by Paul | January 29, 2012 at 09:52 AM ET |

They're running an incredible sale this week and with the imminent reset, this should be your first stop on January 30th. They're running a buy 2 get one FREE special on ALL 3.75" Star Wars action figures which really helps bring that awful $9.99 price tag down to $6.66 each (including The Vintage Collection figures - that's a steal!).

Review: Clone Commander Cody - SW [TPM 3D] - The Clone Wars (CW7)

But Entertainment Earth has updated the availibility of this piece now to February 2012 (and still have it available for pre-order which shouldn't last much longer). Both Episode I And Episode II Battle Droids In Movie Heroes?

Posted by Paul | January 27, 2012 at 11:33 PM ET |

OK, we may be embarassing ourselves here, but it's news to us that there are two different colored Battle Droids in the Movie Heroes line. Were you aware? Not only were we surprised to find both in the wild, we even more shocked that Hasbro is back to doing running changes for inferiorly sculpted figures and haven't the ability to ship figures like Ugnaughts and Hoth Rebel Troopers with running changes. Anyway, click through to see the comparison shot!

The Vintage Collection Found For Three Dollars ($3) Each!!

Posted by Paul | January 22, 2012 at 03:25 PM ET |

Another thing that shocked us today was that we found The Vintage Collection for $3 at two local Walmart stores. But other stores (in the same city) still had them for $8.96. We'd suggest seeing if your local stores has also hopped on the clearance train because the stores that did have these for $3 each told us that they were deleted product. (Which means TVC will be coming under a different SKU going forward.) Click through to check it out!

TARGET Restocks Shelves With Battle Packs!

We thought the stock was finally clearing out, but these are brand-spanking new and in mint condition with no shelf wear. It looks like collectors will have one last opportunity to secure the awesome Defend Kamino set for their collections. Click through for the proof!

Visual Guide Update - Mouse Droid (SDCC Death Star Set) (VC67) - TVC

Posted by Chuck | January 22, 2012 at 03:11 PM ET |

The next collector's bane to be added to our Visual Guide is Mouse Droid (VC67), the second mini figure included with the San Diego Comic Con Death Star set. Only available in this set, Mouse Droid is a repacked figure from a long time ago... Numbered in line with the basic collection of figures, if collectors want to fill that hole in their numbering they will have to resort to purchasing this set on the secondary market. You can read our full review on this set in our Research Droids Review!

See Mahownic Next To Other Podracer Pilots - Great Comparison Shot!

Posted by Paul | January 22, 2012 at 11:30 AM ET |

You saw the report at Yakface.com, now check out a comparison shot of Mahownic next to other podracer pilots. JTA Facebook friend Matthew Pring posts a great picture on our Facebook wall so you can judge just how tiny Mawhonic is.... but judge him by his size not!

Here's an old TARGET exclusive which at the time was very cool. Has it aged well? Find out in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our Disqus comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via e-mail if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Now that we have wrapped up our run of basic figure guides we are going to add a few 'odds and ends' to the The Vintage Collection Visual Guide, starting with one that is driving completists crazy: The San Diego Comic Con exclusive Salacious Crumb. Why is it driving collectors crazy? Because this figure (as well as the Mouse Droid) is numbered with the rest of the basic figures (VC66), yet it is not available any where else, or individually. Packaged on a first time ever mini-card, fans were very excited about this figure's prospects when announced at Toy Fair last year, until the numbering on the back was revealed. These mini figures will undoubtedly leave gaping holes in many collectors' collections unless Hasbro decides to re-release these figures at retail (or mailaway). We were lucky enough to get our hands on one of these sets, and broke this entire set down in our Research Droids Review, so stop by and read about the 2011 San Diego Comic Con Death Star set. Are you listening Hasbro? Re-release this as a retail exclusive two-pack under the Return of the Jedi logo please!

Review: Han Solo (Hoth) [2010 Premier Guild Exclusive] - Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | January 21, 2012 at 01:10 AM ET |

Take a look at the PGM exclusive Han Solo (Hoth) [blue coat] Mini Bust in our Research Droids Reviews entry today. The debate of the actual color of Han's coar is borderline comical - and if you own the Star Wars Chronicles book, you already know that this topic is anything but debatable. Walmart Resets And Provides Preliminary Pricing To Collectors

Posted by Paul | January 20, 2012 at 10:47 AM ET |

We say "preliminary" because anything can change and once Walmart gets wind of the jacked up prices and TARGET and TRU, they likely will follow suit. JTA reader and friend bombadgungan send us a report of a newly set Walmart reset. While some of the tags are a bit confusing (i.e. Saga Legends is done), there is some new information on upcoming products. Click through for his report.

We are now sixty (60!) guides into our The Vintage Collection mega-marathon, and this time we have another repacked figure. Princess Leia (Slave Outfit) is pretty much a straight repack, minus a few accessories from the previous version (but still a nice addition to the TVC line). Sideshow Collectibles S.T.A.P. and Battle Droid Set

OK, this eBay auction has got us VERY curious. JTA Facebook friend Trevor S. alerted us to this auction to inquire about the validity of what appears to be a variation to the bald Endor Rebel Soldier. While we would always err on the side of caution for weird things like this, we honestly have no idea if this is a scam, altered picture or early principal photography for wave 3 of The Vintage Collection by Hasbro. But see it for yourself by clicking through to this auction that he appears to be wearing a skull cap and the Endor helmet is packaged separately off of the figure and to the top right inside the bubble. And of course the image cannot be enlarged. The image appears very clean and looks like something Hasbro would possibly send out. But is this a fake? Probably. Interestingly though, the seller isn't even advertising this as a "rare" variation or anything. Curious to say the least, isn't it?

UPDATE: Mystery solved. Check out our Facebook page for the explanation!

Review: Republic Gunship [Lucky Lekku] - TCW - Walmart Exclusive

Posted by Paul | January 17, 2012 at 01:00 AM ET |

It may be called the Lucky Lekku, but luck ran out for most collectors trying to secure this awesome Republic Gunship for their collections at a fair price. While we reviewed our notes to see what The Clone Wars products we skipped over in our Research Droids Reviews database, we were shocked we didn't talk about this great vehicle yet.... until now. It commands upwards of $200 on eBay today. Will you spend that to secure this former Walmart exclusive for your collection? Visual Guide Update - ARC Trooper Commander [Captain Fordo] (VC54)

Posted by Paul | January 16, 2012 at 01:39 PM ET |

JTA has campaigned for Captain Fordo forever and tired of waiting we made it known back in 2009. He finally became a reality in 2011's The Vintage Collection lineup and came out better than we ever expected. But Hasbro indirectly slapped Tartakovsky fans in the face by changing the figure's name from Captain Fordo to ARC Trooper Commander. We can't really fault them as this was a direct order from Lucasfilm, Ltd. (We'll never understand the demise of that Tartakovsky/Lucasfilm relationship. We digress.) See one of the greatest action figures of all time as we thoroughly examine wave 7's ARC Trooper Commander and then read the glowing review in our Research Droids Review. This is one figure every single Star Wars collector should own but we recommend at least two so you can display both phases side by side.

New Battle Packs Reach The Toy Aisle In Ohio Walmart

Posted by Paul | January 15, 2012 at 08:38 PM ET |

JTA reader Paul B. alerts us to the fact that the new Battle Packs have hit in Ohio at Walmart. I think it's a good bet that Hasbro learned that no one cares about their street dates when it comes to Star Wars toys. Only one Battle Packs set is going to be worth your time and I am personally quite aggravated at the Rebel Heroes and Geonosis Arena Battle sets myself. Not even kids will have any interest in these.Click through for the report!

The 2012 "Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D]" Line Look

Posted by Paul | January 14, 2012 at 11:59 PM ET |

OK readers, we've finally added our official Research Droids Reviews banner for the 2012 line. We are dubbing it the Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] line look and it will house all products released in the "Darth Maul" packaging including Movie Heroes, The Clone Wars and the "Discover The Force" Walmart exclusives. Because The Clone Wars line has basically been demoted to a sub-line (at the moment - this could change of course), we didn't think it warranted having its own category this year, especially since most TCW products don't even sport the logo (like the vehicles and Battle Packs). You can click through to check out our revised index, but let us tell you up front that we have no new products added so don't snoop. We kid with you of course. The product hasn't leaked out to our local stores yet. Here's looking forward to an exciting year (even if the beginning isn't doing it for us at the moment). May the Force be with you.... always.

Review: Qui-Gon Jinn - TVC - VC75

Posted by Paul | January 11, 2012 at 01:15 AM ET |

And we close out wave 10 of The Vintage Collection with two boring figures. This one is the first of the two. Qui-Gon Jinn deserves to be part of The Vintage Collection, but not exactly like this. He needs some doctoring up first before getting released again in order be worthy. See how Research Droids Reviews assesses this figure in 2012. Review: Battle Droid - TVC - VC78

Posted by Paul | January 10, 2012 at 01:25 AM ET |

Here is a very controversial figure. It should be one we like a lot more than we do. It's a gorgeous sculpt, but the smaller scale has impeded the ball-socket articulation and a few other issues are present. Learn about this and more in our Research Droids Reviews for today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our Disqus comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Review: Naboo Royal Guard - TVC - VC83

Posted by Paul | January 09, 2012 at 01:15 AM ET |

Another phenomenal figure in The Phantom Menace wave, the Naboo Royal Guard is exactly what Episode I fans need. This figure is brilliant. Yes, he needs ball-jointed hips, you can't discount all of the other positives this figure possesses despite lacking that premium type of articulation. Today's Research Droids Reviews entry puts all the cards on the table for this figure. See why you'll have to army build him. Posted by Chuck | January 07, 2012 at 03:36 PM ET |

For the start of Wave 5 we have to take a step back in our VC numbering system to pick up Yoda (VC20) from Revenge of the Sith. Even though Yoda was the 20th (numbered) figure in The Vintage Collection, he didn't ship until Wave 5, nearly a quarter of a year after his intended place in the third Return Of The Jedi wave.... More Cautionary Commentary - Hasbro, Are You Reading?

Posted by Paul | January 07, 2012 at 01:54 PM ET |

The Phantom Menace 3D line from Hasbro is certainly a topic of great debate. Our friends at EchoBaseNews.com have also addressed the issue of what may soon be detrimental in finally hurting the Star Wars branding in their weekly The Wampa Pen column. You've seen our thoughts already, but check out their thoughtful commentary as well. This will certainly be an interesting year. We hope 2012 doesn't become one big hot mess.

It's time to close out another wave of figures, this time with the addition of the Super Battle Droid to The Vintage Collection. Stay tuned though, we WILL be kicking off Wave 5 very shortly! In the mean time click below to view our Enhanced Visual Guide, and get the full scoop on this figure in our detailed Research Droids Review!

Review: Ratts Tyerell & Pit Droid - TVC - VC77

Posted by Paul | January 07, 2012 at 01:02 AM ET |

Here's the "other" podracer pilot from The Phantom Menace wave in The Vintage Collection. This figure was originally intended to be part of the 2009 Legacy Collection, but Hasbro switched things around and gave us Clegg Holdfast instead. Research Droids Reviews doesn't get too excited about this release, but there are no doubt collectors out there that have waited a quite a while for this character. Spend some time with us as we, along with the rest of the world, get ready to embrace the 3D release of Episode I! The Hasbro Menace And The Phantom Lurking Over The New Line

Posted by Paul | January 05, 2012 at 10:20 PM ET |

The Vintage Collection Now 50% Off?

Posted by Paul | January 05, 2012 at 09:48 AM ET |

It appears The Vintage Collection is indeed on clearance, at least at this Walmart in the Maryland area. Special thanks to JTA reader Sjefke for the photos. We didn't scan TVC at our Walmart this morning, but if you stop at your local store, we would suggest seeing what your local Walmart rings them up for... which could be half off! Unbelievable. If this is happening nationally, it makes us believe that The Vintage Collection may be shipping under a different SKU for 2012 to help with purging peg-warmers. Ah, these developments are something else.

Review: Quinlan [Yes I Am In Episode I] Vos - TVC - VC85

2012 Ushers In A New Price Hike!

Posted by Paul | January 04, 2012 at 11:03 PM ET |

You've already heard about the Hasbro price increase. It's true. Movie Heroes will be priced at an insulting $8.99 each and Hasbro has The Vintage Collection priced at an obscene $9.99 each (this means Walmart will sell them for this price - kill us now). I can confirm that when I found The Phantom Menace wave at TARGET at the end of December, they rang up for $8.99. I suppose it's possible that some stores will keep The Vintage Collection at $8.99. We'll just have to see what happens. But I don't think it's good news. Expect a new rant and rave shortly and the Movie Heroes line and what an utter debacle it is.

Boba Fett (VC61) Drama Unfolding

Posted by Paul | January 04, 2012 at 07:38 PM ET |

Thanks to our readers posting non-stop in our Disqus comments, we learned that Boba Fett (Prototype Armor) (VC61) is commanding a hefty premium on eBay. It made us wonder. Why in the world would people be bidding so high for this item while the promotion is still active? Then it dawned on us, thanks to pitiful distribution, collectors are having a devil of a time finding the REQUIRED mail-away forms that MUST accompany ANY 5 basic figures' UPCs. Do you have your Boba Fett? We noticed that some auctions just for the certificate are over $10. This is ridiculous. We hope Hasbro takes notice that something MUST change for the future. We wonder if Hasbro will outlet the remaining supply as we don't expect people to get their hands on these the indended way. Click HERE to see these crazy auctions.

Review: [The Best] Queen Amidala [Of All Time] - TVC - VC84

Posted by Paul | January 04, 2012 at 01:10 AM ET |

As we continue our 12 day marathon going over the extremely awesome figures from The Phantom Menace wave from The Vintage Collection in our Research Droids Reviews, today's entry is a step above the rest. And quite frankly, it could the best figure in the entire dozen. This is the absolute best likeness of Queen Amidala ever. Hasbro has nailed it. They need to keep reusing this face sculpt over and over until we're sick of it.... which will be never. No Maul Belt Issues With Darth Maul

Posted by Paul | January 02, 2012 at 05:28 PM ET |

Special thanks to new iPhone owner and good friend Jayson Krebsbach from Yakface.com for his keen eye. Jayson let us know that Darth Maul's belt has been assembled backwards on the new The Vintage Collection figure. We have reshot most of our gallery and now have an incredible 44 photos, most of which are all-new showing this figure in its correct form. We also noticed that our camera settings weren't right making Maul's skin a little pink-looking and the blacks a bit faded. That has been cleared up as well. Hey, we rushed this review so you could see this amazing figure ASAP. As they say, "haste makes waste," but things are finally all right in the world now. Enjoy the revised gallery by clicking HERE or any image below!

You Won't Believe This Price....

Posted by Paul | January 02, 2012 at 02:01 PM ET |

Excuse our French, but holy cow! The former Walmart exclusive 2010 Star Wars "Shadow Of The Dark Side" Jabba's Throne "play-set" is $16.99 and in stock at Amazon.com! Special thanks to JTA reader Frank W. for the head's up! (See people, this is why Hasbro will NEVER make play-sets for us again. We don't support the product when it gets initially released. This was plentiful and you all should have bought one at Walmart when it was first released.) Now go and buy this up on Amazon.com so Hasbro doesn't see this clearance price.
