Posted by Paul | October 31, 2009 at 03:25 AM EDT |

Happy Halloween! Today's entry into our Research Droids Reviews archive is very fitting for we look at a character in Episode V that wore a costume and carried a container, but we don't think he was trick or treating looking for candy. The variant Ugnaught has been released and you should take a look at him because he is awesome! TRU McQuarrie Sets Found! Subtle Differences Exist?

Posted by Paul | October 30, 2009 at 06:29 PM EDT |

Originally reported as speculation yesterday, the McQuarrie Concept Collection exclusive sets indeed were made available today at Philly, PA area Toys R Us stores. Click through for the proof. While not intended to create a frenzy, we do see differences in paint applications in these sets from the ones we received on basic cards (NOT repaints, but subtle differences). Additionally, you may have already read about the missing accessories from other fan site sources as well. We are going to analyze the paint jobs a bit deeper before we make any specific claims about differences, so stay close to JTA as we follow this developing story.

Posted by Paul | October 28, 2009 at 04:35 AM EDT |

We are concerned that many of you in cyberspace will not even check out today's entry of Research Droids Reviews because it is about an action figure that has essentially been a peg warmer since the vintage era. But bypassing this review would be a travesty on your part. Malakili receives what we believe will be his third and final update and what an impressive update he is to say the very least. TARGET Receives Even MORE Legacy ROTJ Wave!

Posted by Paul | October 27, 2009 at 01:00 PM EDT |

Good news! Many sites are reporting that Wave 2 of the Legacy Collection (Return Of The Jedi) is making another heavy round of appearances at TARGET. We can confirm this too as we found the brand-spanking-new wave at three (3) separate locations today! Interestingly, the Ewoks and Princess Leia figures are the hottest with Giran and Malakili being the only longer hanging figures (in rare exceptions). You should pick up this wave without even thinking about it (can you tell we are ROTJ zealots?), but if you need a catalyst to get you moving, check out our in-depth reviews of all 10 figures (including Build A Droid astromechs) HERE in our Research Droids Reviews archive.

This week on Star Wars Action News, Arnie sits down with Joe to discuss the creation of this book, talk about the challenge that is doing Star Wars horror the right way, and finds out the troopth about the Deathtroopers promotional CD that was rumored to have been handed out at New York ComicCon last February...

Review: Major Panno - LC - BD20

Posted by Paul | October 27, 2009 at 03:40 AM EDT |

Nothing entices collector appeal better than a background Star Wars character. Research Droids Reviews looks at a "very" background character. An excellent action figure nonetheless, we fear it be be overlooked by many of you. Find out why this would be a terrible shame. Nien Nunb (B-wing Pilot) - Awesome Figure, Cool Proof!

Posted by Paul | October 25, 2009 at 02:02 PM EDT |

We added another image to our Nien Nunb (B-wing Pilot) Research Droids Review to help with our argument that there is a lot of on screen proof that this character is indeed Nien Nunb. If you look to the right of the image you can even see Lando Calrissian's cape, which allows us to assume that Lando was talking with other Rebels trying to find a strike team just as Han Solo did in that classic Rebel Briefing scene (and eventually chose Nien Nunb). We apologize if you think we are looking into this too deeply, but we think it is pretty cool when an action figure initially appears to be another off-screen or EU character but in fact was in the film depending upon your point of view. Click through to see the screen shot from Episode VI or click here to read our review of Nien Nunb (B-wing Pilot) if you haven't yet.

Review: Ewoks (Paploo & Nho'Apakk) - LC - BD18

Posted by Paul | October 25, 2009 at 05:10 AM EDT |

Ewoks are coming to us left and right in the basic figure line. This is a wonderful thing for us because we love these characters. Research Droids Reviews looks at the excellent Paploo & Nho'Apakk two-pack today. But did you know that the same packaging artwork mistake was duplicated in 2009 from the original mistake on the vintage figure in 1984? It's true; that's some serious homage paying! Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

Hoth Rebel Trooper Variant - Will This Never End?

Posted by Paul | October 24, 2009 at 10:17 AM EDT |

The saga continues! Sites (this time Action Figure Insider) are still asking about that elusive second Hoth Rebel Trooper variant (that should have been made available in a remix case of wave 7 in TLC) and it appears that Hasbro is finally starting to wonder themselves if it was indeed released. Click through to check out the news! You can also read JTA's first report on this figure here as well as our own Hasbro Q & A question on this very much wanted figure!

Kmart Has Legacy Collection Return Of The Jedi Wave!

Posted by Paul | October 24, 2009 at 09:28 AM EDT |

We found the Return Of The Jedi wave at a few Kmart stores this morning. If you have a local store, it may be worth your while to see if they have gotten this difficult wave. At $8.99 each, it's not the cheapest, but it is certainly less than paying for shipping, especially if you're only after a few figures.

Review: Princess Leia (Jabba's Slave) - LC - BD17

Posted by Paul | October 24, 2009 at 06:00 AM EDT |

We have determined what will be the hottest looking and potentially hottest selling Star Wars action figure of 2009. Does Princess Leia (as Jabba's Slave) stack up to meet this boldly exclaimed declaration? We say "yes" but be sure to check out today's Research Droids Reviews entry and see if you agree. It looks at this figure and a new experimental gimmick (molded lower half) being utilized to help with some unattainable poses for a 3.75" figure. (Yes, super-articulated figures can do a lot, but not like this!) Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

Major News Released From Hasbro Q&A This Week!

Posted by Paul | October 24, 2009 at 03:48 AM EDT |

There were some really big announcements in this week's Hasbro Q&A. For starters, the fine folks at Han's Hideout received confirmation of what we surmised initially in our Visual Guide checklist that BD 24 General Grievous has been cancelled from the Legacy Collection, leaving a big ugly hole (for the first time ever) in the basic figure numbering system. Goodness gracious, we may need therapy over this one. Also, Galactic Hunter has received a beautiful image of the production status of Wooof. Be sure to check out these "hot off the press" announcements. And most importantly, don't forget to check out Jedi Temple Archives' Q & A as well!

What happens when an ignored character from Jabba's Palace gets inducted into the basic action figure line? Well, if that character is Giran, it becomes one of the best action figures ever made. Posted by Paul | October 14, 2009 at 08:22 PM EDT |

Thank the Maker! This charge on our credit card is going to feel so good! After our rant, it seems that the fine people at Hasbro have felt our frustration and heard our cries and have magically done something to make the new figures finally appear at retail. Of course we kid with a smile here, but we have indeed just found the new Return Of The Jedi wave at a few TARGET stores. Start up your hunting again! It looks like Fall line may just be finally "falling" into place!

Geonosis Assault Battle Packs - Healthy Return To Retail!

Posted by Paul | October 14, 2009 at 10:51 AM EDT |

Collectors may be interested to know that the Geonosis Assault Battle Packs set is making a healthy return to retail. Toys R Us seems to ber getting them in steady supply but we have also located it at TARGET and Walmart as well. It will also complement your Geonosis Arena Showdown sets very nicely as well! (There are a lot of product nods to Episode II lately, aren't there?) Regardless, it is a very nice set and while we wish it would have contained two bubble cannons, well, one is better than none in our eyes. Check out our in-depth review here.

Review: Darth Krayt/Sigel Dare - LC - Comic Packs (8)

Posted by Paul | October 14, 2009 at 09:23 AM EDT |

Although the first wave of the red phase Legacy Collection Comic Packs contained a lot of repacked sets, the three new ones are very solid and quite impressive! We look at the third (and final) new Comic Packs two-pack and discover that this one delivers just as well! Today's Research Droids Reviews raves about these two figures and we suggets you read our thoughts ASAP! Star Wars Action News - Episode 216

Posted by Chuck | October 13, 2009 at 03:53 PM EDT |

It seems like it's been years while we awaited the new Star Wars novel coming out this week--Deathtroopers, and while the book jacket certainly looked grusome enough, evoking images of Hellraiser's Pinhead going to town on the Emperor's troops, and the thought was so exciting to some costumers that zombie stormtroopers could be seen walking the floor at San Diego Comic Con. But for all the hype, including exclusive "letters from the Imperial Prison Barge Purge" published on our own site, there has been some nervousness in the fan community about this title. A Sci-Fi horror mashup? Those sometimes work (Pitch Black) but often don't (Leprechan in Space), and for Star Wars fans the question has been--is this book the dawning of a new type of Star Wars fiction, or doomed to be a failed experiment? With the book in stores this week, Star Wars Action News brings you their in depth spoiler free review of this novel, so you can listen and find out if this is the perfect way to Star Wars up your Halloween horror reading...

Review: Lumiya/Luke Skywalker - LC - Comic Packs (7)

Posted by Paul | October 13, 2009 at 04:55 AM EDT |

Double agents are a cool thing in Star Wars lore. Lumiya is one of these said characters. Today's Research Droids Reviews checks out her action figure in a recently released Comic Packs set but the real bonus in this set is the new head sculpt on Luke Skywalker! Review: R7-Z0 - TLC - Build A Droid

Posted by Paul | October 12, 2009 at 05:20 AM EDT |

The Build A Droid figures have had some really high points and just a few lower points. The R7 units weren't the most exciting droid ever received, but they are important enough to be immortalized in plastic. Today's Research Droids Reviews takes a look at one of these droids that we honestly just don't know much about at all. Check it out and we hope you also enjoy our newly revised Research Droids Reviews archive, including re-edited reviews and new features! Walmart Exclusive Droid Factory - Don't Dillydally!

Posted by Paul | October 11, 2009 at 01:01 PM EDT |

The Walmart exclusive Droid Factory sets are absolutely flooring us! If your local retail store is lucky enough to even see these grace the shelves, they will undoubtedly disappear within seconds. We personally have witnessed three Walmart stores get one endcap box unit each only to completely sell out within 24 hours. We highly recommend purchasing them if you are fortunate enough to see them; they are selling through like no other exclusive we have seen before. If you do need some prodding, check out our detailed reviews of the Walmart Droid Factory sets and see if we can persuade you to pick these up too! Yes, they are expensive, but we have to say that because of their limited availability (and overall high quality), they are indeed worth the $17.00 each.

Red Phase Wave 1 LC Comic Packs Infiltrating K-mart!

Posted by Paul | October 11, 2009 at 12:50 PM EDT |

Still can't find those darn new Comic Packs? K-mart is getting a steady supply of the first wave of red phase Legacy Collection Comic Packs. A little more expensive at K-mart than at Walmart or TARGET, but at least they have them. And they most likely will still will be less than paying for shipping online. Our local stores had them for $15.79, your mileage may vary. You can also check out our review of the Yuuzhan Vong/Kyle Katarn pack now but be sure to check back this week for both the Lumiya/Luke Skywalker and Darth Krayt/Sigel Dare Comic Packs to be added to our Research Droids Reviews archives as well.

Y-wing Bomber Makes Strong Return To Retail!

Posted by Paul | October 11, 2009 at 12:45 PM EDT |

It's good to know that since Hasbro isn't sending out any new basic figures, they are indeed managing to get out harder to find vehicles, like the very expensive Y-wing Bomber. We found these in plentiful supply at both Walmart and TARGET this weekend. It looks like this will now be easier to come by at retail.

Review: 5D6-RA7 - TLC - Droid Factory Pack In

Posted by Paul | October 11, 2009 at 06:05 AM EDT |

The Build A Droid figures are the best pack-in Hasbro has ever given us period. Today's Research Droids Reviews takes a look at the first protocol droid we got in the series, the film specific Death Star Droid. While not seen that well in Episode IV, he is indeed visible and he is an excellent update to a figure that was first attempted over a decade ago. (Unbelievable, isn't it?) Check it out and we hope you also enjoy our newly revised Research Droids Reviews archive, including re-edited reviews and new features! Review: AAT Driver Battle Droid - TCW - CW33

Posted by Paul | October 03, 2009 at 03:57 PM EDT |

Repainted actions figures can be very cool or very boring. This battle droid falls somewhere in between, but perhaps our noncommittal opinion is based on the fact that his packaging destroys his shape. Research Droids Reviews looks at this rather neat AND disappointing figure. Check it out and we hope you also enjoy our newly revised Research Droids Reviews archive, including re-edited reviews and new features! It's a work in progress so we appreciate your patience in advance! Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Walmart No Longer Selling For Less!

Posted by Paul | October 02, 2009 at 08:12 AM EDT |

The Walmart exclusive Under The Helmet series MSRP has taken a "flying leap" up to $16.97. It is now more expensive to buy the two figures together than separately now. How much higher can prices go? We don't know but we hope change is in the future. After the expensive Droid Factory sets and not this, we hope this doesn't affect our beloved hobby. Click through to check out the discouraging proof!

Visual Guide Update - TCW Jawas

Posted by Chuck | October 01, 2009 at 08:33 PM EDT |

These Tatooine scavengers hunt for lost or abandoned equipment – machinery, droids, even star fighters that appear unoccupied. Jawas look almost identical to outsiders, but among each other, they easily identify differences in lineage, health and other details.
