Review: Radio Control Hailfire Droid - TCW - Vehicle

Posted by Paul | March 31, 2011 at 12:40 AM ET |

You can't really fault Hasbro for trying to make some unique products to complement the basic figure line. But we're not sure how well an electronic version of a vehicle that never appears in the series works. (And they say they won't make us a Sail Barge? At least that vehicle was in The Clone Wars! Sheesh!) See why Research Droids Reviews isn't too keen on the Radio Control Hailfire Droid. It just doesn't stack up in more ways than one. We hope that you'll also leave comments in our Facebook section and vote in our poll. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Don't forget we accept requests so e-mail us.

eBay Flashback: Displaying Your Vintage Figures!

Posted by Chuck | March 29, 2011 at 09:03 PM ET |

Today's eBay Flashback doesn't necessarily take us back, but is definitely related to our favorite toys of yesteryear! I recently revamped my vintage display and was in need of some nice stands with a small footprint. After doing some searching I purchased a pack of 100 stands outfitted for vintage Star Wars figures, hoping for the best. I was pleasantly surprised by what eBay seller toyhob offered! Selling in packs of 20, 50 and 100, these stands offer an extremely small footprint and fit better than 90% of my figures (the exceptions being some of the wider stance figures where the feet just hang over a bit, such as Barada and the astromech droids).

So, if you are looking for a solution for your vintage figures you might want to give these a try. After shipping, you'll still pay less than 50 cents per stand. Click here to check out these quality stands, and click through for some detailed pictures of my stands. A product worthy of the Archives...

eBay Flashback: Vintage MOC Boba Fett

Posted by Chuck | March 28, 2011 at 05:15 PM ET |

Today we kicked off our Vintage Vs Modern series of updates, so we thought we'd continue with that theme by following up on our 12-back eBay Flashback article, this time taking a look at one of the most sought after regularly released MOC vintage figures: Boba Fett. Whether he's on the incredibly expensive SW 21-back, or on the lowely Tri-Logo cardback, you can expect to pay quite the premium for this collectible. Take a look at just a few samples of this figures release.

As we look at each figure one by one, our friends from across the web will all be contributing to this supplement to bring a broader scope determining what makes an action figure worthy of definitive status. To start things off, our very own Paul Harrison looks at Bossk (Bounty Hunter), one of his absolute favorite vintage figures. Click through for our first 2011: It’s Down To Seven: Vintage Supplement! Review: Power Droid - TSC - SAGA 014

Posted by Paul | March 28, 2011 at 12:15 AM ET |

It takes quite a bit of effort to dislike The Saga Collection's Power Droid. Despite its awkward action feature, Hasbro dressed it up in their love and made it specific to Echo Base (and did a phenomenal job with it). Research Droids Reviews analyzes this awesome droid (and its fellow droid accessory, the Treadwell Droid) and determines that this is a figure [set] not to miss! We'll be upfront with you. Customizing is not our strong point. We don't touch exacto knives, glue and soldering irons. We'll leave that to the experts, like our friends at ImperialShipyards.net and Yakface.com. But we do have enough parts in our collection now to make some cool updates to some of our favorite action figures with simple part swapping. JTA (with some inspiration from a figure we saw from the cool guys at DewbackPatrol.com) has "played" with some of our action figures and culled together some ideas for Hasbro to maybe consider in The Vintage Collection. There is a reason we're doing this. Since Hasbro is encouraging us to order online, we feel they've got to meet us half way. These are just inital suggestions, a jumping off point for Hasbro.Click through to see what we've proposed.

Review: Fi-Ek Sirch (Jedi Knight) - TVC - VC49

Posted by Paul | March 13, 2011 at 01:05 AM ET |

Proof that Hasbro knows how to perfectly nail characters from Attack Of The Clones as we have claimed many times before, Fi-Ek Sirch (Jedi Knight) is easily the best action figure from wave 6 of The Vintage Collection and a figure everyone should own. The sad thing? Many of you out there won't even give him a chance due to his obscurity in the film. Review: Weequay (Skiff Master) - TVC - VC48

Posted by Paul | March 12, 2011 at 01:01 AM ET |

One group of characters that Hasbro effortlessly recreates from the films into the basic figure line are those that are part of Jabba The Hutt's retinue. The latest is a figure that makes its debut in the basic figure line, the Weequay (Skiff Master). See why Research Droids Reviews isn't really listening to the banter that he has some issues. Because Weequay (Skiff Guard) is cool despite some very minor drawbacks. We hope that you'll also leave comments in our Facebook section and vote in our poll. New Enhancement In Research Droids Reviews!

Posted by Paul | March 11, 2011 at 12:41 PM ET |

For those of you who check in daily with our Research Droids Reviews, you may have already noticed a new section after the review entitled Collector Notes. This is the product of correspondence we have received in our forums in addition to many email requests that you'd like to see a distilled section of the most important data points for a figure. If you have any more ideas of what you'd like included here, please email us as soon as possible because we don't want to make changes too far down the road. We hope you enjoy this latest enhancement and we'll also be eventually going back and adding this to the older reviews as well, but it will take some time. We will post announcements as updates are made.

Wave 6 of The Vintage Collection is IN STOCK right now at HasbroToyShop.com. This won't last long! (You can read our Research Droids Reviews on the entire wave HERE too if you need some shopping tips!)

UPDATE: SOLD OUT! Big surprise, right?

Review: General Lando Calrissian - TVC - VC47

Posted by Paul | March 11, 2011 at 01:05 AM ET |

It's the first figure from the 1985 The Power Of The Force line that has been released in The Vintage Collection! And he comes for the first time to us on a Return Of The Jedi card back! See the definitive version of Lando Calrissian (General Pilot) in today's Research Droids Reviews and see how good Hasbro was to us. The figure has a few faults, but overall is amazing. We hope that you'll also leave comments in our Facebook section and vote in our poll. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Don't forget we accept requests so e-mail us.

General Lando Calrissian: For Better Or For Worse?

Posted by Paul | March 10, 2011 at 08:04 PM ET |

OK, we get it! Many of you are very unhappy with that huge stretchy band that serves as a tie for General Lando Calrissian's cape. Many of you have posted on our Facebook page as well as emailed us that you were wondering how well the 2004 SW/OTC Lando Calrissian (Death Star Assault) plastic molded cape looks on the TVC figure. Well, click through to find out. We actually spent some time to photograph the comparison for you!

El-Les Found Aplenty! Check Him Out!

Posted by Paul | March 09, 2011 at 08:48 AM ET |

It looks like there may be an unknown case assortment to wave 7 of The Clone Wars. We found more of the wave in Princeton, NJ this morning and found a ton of El-Les figures, but no Aqua Droids, whereas we found plenty of Aqua Droids and no El-Les in PA. But don't quote us on that. Check out the brand new Ahsoka! She's just hitting brick and mortar right now! Hasbro drops her last name for a much more favorable sculpt which most should now consider to be the definitive version of her, at least for a while. Review: R2-D2 - TSC - SAGA 010

Posted by Paul | March 08, 2011 at 01:35 AM ET |

The Saga Collection brought collectors a lot of great all-new figures in addition to some wonderful updates. Research Droids Reviews looks at another cool stab Hasbro made at trying to create a unique R2-D2 which many consider to be the modern update to the 1982 Artoo-Detoo (With Sensorscope) figure. What will you decide though? We hope that you'll also leave comments in our Facebook section and vote in our poll. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Review: AT-AT Driver - TSC - SAGA 009

Posted by Paul | March 07, 2011 at 01:10 AM ET |

Many collectors will tell you that they prefer the 2006 TSC AT-AT Driver over the 2009 LC version. And to be honest, we somewhat agree with them. There is something special about the figure that came in The Saga Collection and Research Droids Reviews decides where the figure just slightly misses the boat. We hope that you'll also leave comments in our Facebook section and vote in our poll. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Don't forget we accept requests so e-mail us.

Review: General Veers - TSC - SAGA 007

Posted by Paul | March 06, 2011 at 01:07 AM ET |

We head back in time for a little bit and check out the Battle Of Hoth wave from 2006's The Saga Collection. General Veers is the topic of today's Research Droids Reviews and we discover what a good (and bad) figure he is. He has a fantastic likeness and silhouette (actually some of the best we have ever seen), but what about that articulation?! The Legacy Collection WED Treadwell Droid Found In Episode V?!

Posted by Paul | March 06, 2011 at 12:20 AM ET |

We often do a great deal of painstaking research while writing up our Research Droids Reviews to source the figures as accurately as possible. And there have even been times when we have reached out to friends to help us figure out some of the more difficult characters. We particularly find it really cool when we discover things in the source materials and stills that we see for the very first time. Do you remember the 2009 TLC Jawa & WED Treadwell Droid figure two-pack? The included droid was thought to be from the Expanded Universe (or deleted scene from A New Hope) because that specific silver/gray and brown droid could not be found in the film. Only the white and red version is visible in A New Hope (unless we're incorrect here - which we don't think we are). Well anyway, we found the gray/silver and brown version at Echo Base in The Empire Strikes Back. This may or may not be old news to many of you, but we think it's cool that we can now source that Treadwell droid to The Empire Strikes Back! Click through for the movie still.

Posted by Paul | March 05, 2011 at 01:25 AM ET |

Do You Know The Glory Of The Attack Of The Clones Wave?

Posted by Paul | March 02, 2011 at 08:10 PM ET |

We had to make it a point to rave uncontrollably about the fourth wave of The Vintage Collection, also known as the Attack Of The Clones wave. Kit Fisto is the one "odd" figure in the wave as his likeness is based on his appearance in Revenge Of The Sith. We don't expect Hasbro to make any card back changes to correct this as they probably don't even know they made this error or know the difference. But if you're an "Original Trilogy-only" collector, may we encourage to try to pick up some of these most impressive figures? We feel it rivals the previous Return Of The Jedi wave. The new figures are spectacular and the refreshed/retooled/repainted figures are better than ever. This is truly an incredible group of figures that we are so proud to own. Click any image below to check out a ton of pictures and details in our Research Droids Reviews as it will take you to a listing of all the reviews of the figures in this spectacular wave. You won't be sorry.

eBay Flashback: Toy Fair Collectibles

Posted by Chuck | March 02, 2011 at 03:43 PM ET |

In the past, Toy Fair has produced some of the coolest, most unique and highly sought after Star Wars collectibles! These days however, it seems only LEGO still produces unique items only available at Toy Fair. Today we look at a few of the coolest and most sought after items to garnish the title Toy Fair Exclusive. The incredibly cool Hasbro Press Kit from 2005 was highly limited and dazzled collectors with it's interactive Anakin to Darth Vader "transformation". In 2002 Hasbro caused such an uproar with their exclusive 'silver' Darth Vader that they eventually put it up for the masses on StarWarsShop.com. LEGO produced another cool ROTS collectible with their V.I.P. Gala gift in 2005. Want more? Search for them on eBay and see if you missed out on any! You might be surprised at what you can find!
