What Makes a Good Wave?

The awesome Vintage Collection is just around the corner, and with it comes the prospect of new figures, the re-release of some we haven’t seen in quite some time, and a few we’ve seen pretty recently… To go along with Paul’s article, I wanted to offer up some additional thoughts. There is one thing in particular that will be essential in making sure we get through one wave to the next: case assortments.

Take a look at these visual guides and examine the waves that the figures were included in:

• L8-L9 (Hasbro – Legacy Collection Build a Droid Series) -4 Repacks, 2 repaints, and 7 new figures (including BAD)
• R3-A2 (Hasbro – Legacy Collection Build a Droid Series) – 3 Repaints (Jawa is retool/repaint), 3 Kit-bashes, 7 new figures (including BAD and KPR Security droid)
• BG-J38 (Hasbro – Legacy Collection Build a Droid Series) – 3 kit bashes, 5 new figures (including BAD)
• Republic Trooper (The Old Republic) (Hasbro – The Vintage Collection VC113) – 4 repacks, 2 kit-bash, 6 new figures
• Rebel Fleet Trooper (Hasbro – The Vintage Collection VC52) – 1 kit-bash, 1 retool/new accessories, 4 new figures
• Gamorrean Guard (Hasbro – The Vintage Collection VC21) – 1 kit-bash, 6 new figures

Aside from the fact that build a droid is sorely missed, and that these figures are phenomenal by themselves, in my opinion, these are the best 6 waves/case assortments that have been put together, perhaps ever.

As a side-note, several of the waves of TVC1 had more repacks/kit bashes than all-new figures. (2, 4, 5, 8, 11 for instance). However, this is largely negated because we know that even just a head-swap of an already existing sculpt is considered a “new figure” by Hasbro. It is interesting to see that wave 1 of TVC2 is mostly straight repacks, which was really not all that common in TVC1 (some may have been repacks to us because they were the same character, but would have been considered “all new” by Hasbro).

Here are some questions to ponder:

Does the amount of new figures in a wave make it a good wave?

Is it the characters (background, main, ST vs OT, etc.) in the wave that make it good?

How big a role does the quantity of a single figure in a case play (3x Jyn vs 1x new figure)?

Do you prefer mixed waves (PT, OT, and NT) or “themed” waves (all from one movie, EU, etc.)?
