The Last Jedi's Presence At D23 Expo

Rian Johnson appeared on stage alone since Kathleen Kennedy is apparently on set with Ron Howard at the ‘Han Solo’ shoot. They showed some behind-the-scenes stills and the brought out Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Gwendoline Christie (which Johnson joked about already trying to get GoT spoliers from) and then they brought out the newcomers Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio Del Toro. And, a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel. Read more after the jump

Next, Daisy briefly spoke about the filming in Ireland and said that she and Rian jigged for an hour on the last day of filming. John Boyega says he will be fighting a formidable opponent in The Last Jedi as Gwendoline stood in front of him looking intimidating (speculate away!).

Gwendoline joked that her Phasma costume gets a bit warm, so she just tosses a casserole in it and then its ready for lunch!

Kelly Marie Tran said she felt as though she had won the Golden Ticket when she was cast. Dern said it was the opportunity of a life time and she also said she would say the word “pew” in scenes when she used a weapon. They showed a picture of her from the film holding a blaster.

Benicio Del Toro said he saw the original when he was 10-years-old and told Johnson, “When you called, and told me the title, I said, ‘Let’s go!'”

Mark Hamill then joined the cast on stage. He joked, “It’s so kind of you to make me not stand next to Gwendoline. They said I’m too short for a Stormtrooper!”

“When I read the script, there were so many unexpected elemented, which is great in a Star Wars film, because it’s getting harder and harder to bring new stuff to the table. This is a real game-changer.” Hamill shared. Game changer…good or bad? you decide…He then said, “I’ve learned to express that alot more artfully.” as a reference to his critical comments of Rian’s script.

Hamill said that he would make a comment like, “You can’t please everyone.” and then the headline will say, “Star Wars bound to disappoint says Hamill!”

They showed a behind-the-scenes video showing new looks and a lot of new creatures.

In the video, Daisy says that the film is, “unexpected but right” and will have people saying, “oh my god” over the events in the film. Daisy then said that this film feels like it’s own thing. The video ended with Carrie Fisher saying, “it’s about family, and that’s what’s so powerful about it” oooohh my.

It looks much more visually interesting than TFA. Love the creatures and sets. This looks more fantasy like and whimsical.

    • Mike_5555

Well said. In terms of visuals, TFA was executed well but bland. Thankfully it looks like TLJ won’t have that issue.

    • I know, right? My first knee-jerk reaction WAS NOT “RESIST!”

  • Thundrstruckd

I literally just saw this. Looks like there is a submerged X Wing there as speculated earlier based on the Lego art. Who lifts it will be the interesting part.

    • There is, you can see it on the pinball machine art as well. I’m not sure how I really feel about that yet. If Rey lifts it out (at least first try), i’ll be super bummed out. idk, definitely have mixed feelings about that part lol

      • Thundrstruckd

I have no plans to see this movie. But if I did, and she lifts it, that would be when I got up and walked out. However, it is possible that we see a scene repeated from ESB, where Rey is Luke and Luke is Yoda. This may also be a scene where we see a flashback of Yoda, with the rumors being that he’s in the movie.

  • Jaken Wraith

Had a feeling for little bit now that Movie is going to kick a#@, and that just solidified even more. I liked that quick Shot of that really long Transport of some kind.

    • Rivesjunctionite

It’s going to look amazing. Hope the story holds up!

      • Jimmy Griffin

I’m really optimistic about it; I don’t think it’s going to have the same rehash problems that TFA did.

        • It’s looking more promising for standing apart that’s for sure. I am more optimistic after seeing this.

  • Caleb Amos

I think it was probably the new Asian lady character but the person falling down those pods looked like Dr aphra… Or maybe it was jus me.

    • Long Snoot

Aphra should be pretty old at this point…

  • Superflukullus

So it seems like Kylo is turning good since it seems in one of these he’s fighting people with staffs which could be Pretorian guards or whatever they are called also it seems that he looks like he is in a resistance base.

    • Hazzbro Jonez

this is what my wife has been saying since she saw TFA .

  • Mike_5555

I forgot that the Star Wars presentation at D23 was today, so this is a pleasant birthday surprise. I really enjoyed the sizzle reel, it looks promising so far. I actually think these behind the scenes features are far more interesting than the trailers and they are more effective at raising my excitement for the films.

    • Jimmy Griffin

      Happy Birthday.

      • Mike_5555

        Thanks! 🙂

    • I agree! This was a great video to get me excited. The creatures looked interesting, the action looks great…it’s all piecing together. I am just praying the Story is great as well. Happy Birthday, Mike!

      • Mike_5555

Me too! The film may be beautiful, but we need story and character development too. Thanks, Colin!

    • Mbraze

The Rogue One sizzle reel was stunning, I watched that over and over, ha.

  • DashGalaxyy

Excited and worried. Changes? I’m all for that as long as they do not kill off Skywalker in this film. That is a deal breaker.

    • Funtomaz

Would they really kill off the last remaining human main character of the OT? Leia can’t have a part in Ep IX (if what Lucasfilm said will hold true). If Luke becomes one with the Force, I suppose it won’t be before the very end of Episode IX. I want him to have a happy ending though. But chances are slim, I fear.
One might be worried, since the “old mentor has to die so his pupil can step out of his shadow and grow” trope is something Star Wars has done over and over and over again.

      • DashGalaxyy

The cliché tropes is what Im hoping they avoid. Very frustrating to think that for the sake of these new, and quite frankly until proven otherwise not so interesting characters, that they would kill off the center and binding glue of the mythology. Lets hope thats not the case!!

        • John Titus

Emporer Kennedy is giving an evil grin.

    • Fire JJ Make SW Great Again!

They probably were until Fisher died but changed it last minute.

  • Funtomaz

So Finn does actually change his clothes 😉 X-Wing pilot suit and FO officer disguise?
I hope we get a Luke action figure (both scales) with his first outfit he wears, the other outfit shown is ok, but I think the Hermit Luke outfit has more things going for it.
Whatever, I will see this on opening day and I hope I will like the “unexpected turns” this movie is supposed to take. A few surprises here and there are not a bad thing after TFA played it safe for the most part.

  • DarthXit

So…for me really hard to get a feeling of quality from these BTS…usually quite stylized shots…like cropping a photo to show only but you want…

But questions, yes…only superficial however. 0:57 – the smaller ships…anybody see prequal jedi star fighters in those designs, the red and blue smaller ships?

Someone mentioned this, but Kylo and Rey fighting guys with staffs…just prop/stand-ins or something to conclude from this?

1:48 – who is that? I thought at first was del Toro, but after pausing, thinking maybe Serkis…he also seemed to have some kind of crown or something…maybe a motion capture thingy…he did not have all the dots like Lupita, so maybe not Serkis. I am stumped.

  • EPC-421

Personally the behind-the-scenes video got me more excited than the official trailer, alot of good stuff shown.
Also I like this bug thing.

    • I liked the creatures I saw thus far

      • Mike_5555

Me too. TFA only had a few memorable creatures but it’s looks like TLJ will be an improvement in that area. I just hope they sprinkle in a few more existing aliens (from either/both the OT and the PT).

        • Yes, me too! I think TFA tried to hard with Maz’s castle. Most creatures there just didn’t work for me . I’m with you Mike, I want some familiar aliens as well.

    • Mike_5555

When I saw that alien I immediately thought “I want a figure of that” which is a good sign.

  • Sithewok

That was much more exciting than the trailer, in my opinion. Love all of the new creatures and aliens.

    • I agree! the creatures look great so far

  • Rivesjunctionite

So Porgs are a cross between Mosep and an owl.

    • Fire JJ Make SW Great Again!

Looks more like a cross between a Digimon and Pokémon.

  • zx_spectrum_30

    Felt better than the trailer.

Love the look of Leia and great to see A-Wings.

Like the shot of Kylo with Imperial Decor and the slight tweek to the Stormtroopers.

Not convinced about the creatures – hope that the owls, dragon thing from Never Ending Story and crystal wolf don’t have big parts.

  • Zack

John Boyega says he will be fighting a formidable opponent in The Last Jedi as Gwendoline stood in front of him looking intimidating (speculate away!).

Finn will fight Phasma with a lightsaber while Phasma uses her new spear. #JediFinn

  • Hazzbro Jonez

watched this with my 10 year old daughter . then we sighed at the fact that carrie is no longer with us … it was bittersweet . she is pumped for the movie and remarked that the Porgo creatures remind her of hatchimals hahahaha . i think i got too mad initially at the re-use of walkers but this video literally made me eat my words

    • Oh My…they are hatchimals! That CRAZY little thing I went from store to store and sat online staring at a screen for HOURS on end to find in time for Christmas! I think I blocked that thing from my mind, that’s why I didn’t notice the similarities lol

  • Fire JJ Make SW Great Again!

Hoping Del Toro doesn’t suck. Outside rare exceptions like Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing and the like it seems that established Hollywood name actors ala Natalie Portman and SLJ perform poorly in SW for some reason.

The most memorable performances of the films are usually the no names – Ford, McDiarmid, Oz, Ridley etc. which is a trend I hope they continue in the other films.

    • Mike_5555

I would also say Liam Neeson, who was already an established actor, gave a good performance as well. Say what you will about TPM, but Qui-Gon and Neeson weren’t part of the problem.

Did you just admit that Diasy Ridley gave a memorable performance?
